The Calgary Drop-In and Rehab Centre ("the DI") is a low-barrier, housing-focused shelter that serves some of the city's most vulnerable people.

At the DI, we focus on providing a person's basic needs, while doing everything possible to find them a permanent, safe home that meets their individual needs.

The DI works within the core values of housing first, trauma-informed care, and harm reduction to support staff and guests.


Position Summary**Reporting to the to the Program Manager of DI Community Housing, the PWLE worker offers hope to program participants by sharing their lived experience, offering mentorship and community connection; advocating for client needs; supporting an integrated trauma informed and recovery oriented framework; reduce barriers that limit access to health and social support; and provide outreach to support individuals in achieving stability and wellness in their home.


You have the capacity and skillset to interact comfortably with others who are active in their addiction and mental health through a Harm Reduction, Trauma Informed, and Housing First lens.

You demonstrate the ability to balance between engaging with empathy and compassion while maintaining professional boundaries in the workplace.

Time Commitment**40 hours per rotation with 5 days on and 2 days off. Some unusual hours may be required from time to time as the need arises. Schedule may be altered at the discretion of management.

Job Duties and Responsibilities**- Provide individual or group support for program participants transitioning out of homelessness into housing who have been impacted by substance use, addiction, and mental health.

  • Willingness to share lived experience, offer nonjudgmental support, and reduce system barriers to help those engage in health and social supports.
  • Openminded and willing to participate in culturally and spiritually diverse environments and events.
  • Encourage and build moral within program participants, colleagues, and other service providers.
  • In accordance with a client's cocreated care plan, provides information to clients regarding empowerment, selfhelp education, practical information, resources, and life skills to help increase independence in community.
  • Engage in supportive conversation with individuals to discuss and explore personal goals and help connect to internal and external services to assist in achieving their goals.
  • Assists clients with community integration activities, and accompanies clients to a range of community services, and appointments.
  • Organize graduation ceremonies for those who completed the Graduation check list and ready to integrate back into community.
  • Be a creative problem solver and have the ability to think outside the box in order to help individuals achieve success where they formerly have not.
  • Complete required documentation to ensure accurate, timely, and useful collection of client information and program data.
  • Other duties as required.

Required Competencies and Qualifications

  • Two years related experience (volunteer or paid), preferably working with individuals with housing, mental health, substance use, poverty, homelessness and food insecurity.
  • Lived experience of homelessness and graduating from a Housing First program is an asset.
  • Ability to utilize own lived experience to support other individuals transitioning out of homelessness and into housing.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of selfawareness and healthy boundaries.
  • A clean, valid class 5 driver's license (must be at least 25 years of age) and a willingness to transport clients with agency vehicles is an asset.
  • Experience working in distress and/or highstress situations, which may include emergency response.
  • Resiliency and stress tolerance and the ability to maintain composure, remain calm and focused when dealing with a high volume of volatile and stressful situations.
  • Resourcefulness and knowledge of community resources and social support systems.
  • Energetic and selfdirected, with effective time management and organizational skills including the ability to deal with several priorities at the same time.
  • Excellent communications skills, both verbal and written
  • Proficient in Office365 and Microsoft Office Suite 201
  • Eager to learn new systems and adopt improved best practices
  • Must demonstrate initiative and work autonomously
  • Must be acceptable of industry risks, including coming into contact with bodily fluids
