Reporting to the HSE Director, the HSE Manager works to ensure compliance with Bird Industrial Health, Safety and Environment Management Program, Occupational Health and Safety legislation, and the client site-specific requirements

Responsibilities:

  • Understand and adhere to Bird's safety management system, policies, procedures and values.
  • Maintain timely and accurate safety reporting, including incident reports, leading and trailing indicators.
  • Communicate safety material to management, field safety advisors and supervision.
  • Take a lead role for the monthly safety meeting.
  • Be visible in the field and take a lead role in establishing safety leadership presence in the field.
  • Ensure that safety standards are maintained and continually seek ways to improve safety standards.
  • Establish and ensure implantation of best safety practices.
  • Advise management on all matters pertaining to safety and health including compliance with Bird's regulations on safety and health.
  • Ensure all staff have received appropriate safety and health training as stipulated in the HSE manual.
  • Conduct safety department reviews regularly to ensure the health and safety objectives are being met.
  • Investigate and report all reportable accidents, internally and external to the relevant parties.
  • Brief and instruct subcontractors on the safety and health procedures and instructions that they, and their employees, are required to comply with.
  • Prepare a project Site Safety Management Plan (SSMP) if required by the client.

Qualifications:

  • Recognized Certification such as National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO), CRSP, CHSC, etc.
  • 5 years' experience in an HSE Leadership role
  • Post-Secondary Education, diploma Level OH&S and higher with at least 2 years direct HSE experience or Certificate Level Post-Secondary OH&S with 3 years direct HSE experience will be considered
  • Sound and demonstrated knowledge in Occupational Health and Safety Regulations
  • Formal training in Safety and Risk Management
  • Experience and technical proficiency using Information Technology; computer systems, Microsoft software programs and digital HSE platforms
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in Industrial work settings, multitrade discipline experience preferred
  • Evidence of exceptional leadership skills and ability to influence and work within informal teams
  • Ability to inspire trust in difficult situations by instilling confidence and engaging people on matters that affect them
  • Detail oriented, selfmotivated, resourceful, with strong time management skills
  • Ability to remain objective and maintain a factual perspective when dealing with questions and inquiries Ability to maintain confidentiality and deal with sensitive information effectively with a high level of accuracy
