The dietitian is responsible for providing nutrition care to patients in the Bariatric Clinic, which includes consultation, assessment and education.

He or she sees and encourages the delivery of compassionate and compassionate care to patients who are morbidly obese.

He or she participates in the activities of his department and the Hospital as well as in educational activities that support the objectives of his profession and his organization.

He or she adheres to the professional obligations set out by the College of Dietitians of Ontario.

The dietitian is responsible for providing care in accordance with the vision and values of the hospital and the standards of the relevant professional associations.


The incumbent participates in the activities and programs of his department and the Hospital; these activities focus on an environment that promotes patient safety and health and contributes to quality improvement and risk management initiatives.

The dietitian must clearly support and provide patient-centered care and their families.

Employees must treat these people with respect and dignity and report to them immediately with their name, position and role.

Whenever possible, employees should ensure that patients and their families receive complete and accurate information; they give them the opportunity to ask questions and encourage them to participate in caregiving and decision-making to the degree that they wish to do so.

Employees must work collaboratively by encouraging patients and their families to participate in the development of their care plans.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Delivering services in accordance with HDH's mission, vision and values by upholding its core values of providing patientcentered and familycentered care (dignity and respect, sharing of information, participation and collaboration).
  • Conduct interviews with identified or identified patients, assess their nutritional status, interpret medical data and laboratory data, develop, implement and evaluate the results of appropriate nutritional therapy.
  • Identify patients who need a nutritional intervention by interpreting and evaluating the nutritional status and state of health of the patient and making appropriate recommendations (support for enteral and parenteral nutrition, need for or restriction of vitamins or supplements minerals, medication changes).
  • Develop and maintain an uptodate nutritional plan, counsel and educate patients / clients individually or in groups. Stay in touch with external agencies / organizations for appropriate nutrition monitoring.
  • Provide comprehensive recommendations on patient care to maximize treatment and outcome (e.g., drugfood interactions, surgical implications for diet, and patient education about selfmanagement, medicines and food).
  • Refer patients to other health professionals and recommend consultation with other medical specialties.
  • Keep proper documentation on all patients that he or she is caring for.
  • Act as a full member of the multidisciplinary team in designated clinics and medical services.
  • Develop, review, update and implement educational materials and programs for patients and their families.
  • As a member of the care team, act as a consultant and advocate for nutrition issues for all patients through multidisciplinary visits, family conferences and program development meetings.
  • Provide education and onsite development on clinical nutrition to physicians, nurses and other health professionals.
  • Maintain current knowledge of nutrition, quality of care, professional knowledge and skills as set out in the Code of Ethics of the College of Dietitians of Ontario, Canadian associations of dietetics and in the standards of care of the profession.
  • Integrate clinical practice guidelines and evidencebased care into the nutritional treatment of patients / clients.
  • Participate in ongoing research projects within the clinical field.
  • Maintain a high level of personal competence through ongoing training and continuous critical assessment of professional experience.
  • Compile statistics of his workload on a daily and monthly basis.
  • Participate in activities and committees of national and provincial professional associations.

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's degree in dietetics and nutrition.
  • Dietary Internship approved by Dietitians of Canada (DC) or its equivalent.
  • College of Dietitians of Ontario, Dietitians Association of Canada
  • Specialized skills and training:
  • Experience in clinical nutrition.
  • Knowledge of nutritional care for patients undergoing bariatric surgery would be an asset preferred
  • Certificate of Diabetes Educator preferred
  • Experience in an ambulatory care work environment preferred
  • Commitment to providing a positive experience for the patient through adequate support and positive patient outcomes.
