Postdoctoral Fellowship in Science and Belief in Society


We are seeking a highly qualified and motivated individual to join our team to contribute to exciting new research on the role that belief plays in shaping popular engagement with science.


Position Summary


The Postdoctoral Fellow in Science and Belief in Society will be responsible for overseeing collaborative research outputs and publications for the International Research Network for the Study of Science and Belief in Society, while also undertaking their own cutting-edge research and grant development within the Science in Society Lab at McMaster University.

This position will be under the supervision of Dr. Alexander Hall.

Position Description


The Postdoctoral Fellow in Science and Belief in Society will be an inaugural member of the newly formed Science in Society Lab and will work closely with Dr.

Alexander Hall in establishing this new multidisciplinary hub for studying science in society.


The Postdoctoral Fellow will coordinate and edit a range of academic publications with colleagues in the International Research Network for the Study of Science and Belief in Society, focusing on potential themes, such as science and belief in the media, scientific misinformation, and diversity in STEMM.


The successful incumbent will gain expertise in innovative qualitative designs and mixed methods approaches, and firsthand experience of editorial practices and peer-review processes.

Shaped by their own interests and qualifications, the incumbent will have the opportunity to engage in other research projects led by Dr.

Alexander Hall, deliver guest lectures within the School of Interdisciplinary Science and co-supervise student research.

Required Qualifications/Experience

  • A Ph.
D. in a relevant area (including, but not limited to science and technology studies, science communication, history and/or philosophy of science, anthropology, and qualitative sociology)

  • A strong trackrecord in research that engages with issues relating to science's role in and/or impact on society
  • A strong trackrecord of writing, editing and publishing research findings for academic and/or nonacademic audiences

Desirable Qualifications/Experience

  • A strong methodological grounding, with some experience of both qualitative and quantitative approaches to studying science in society
  • Experience in organising or administering academic networks and/or community outreach or engagement activities
  • Experience researching or working in partnership with diverse community groups
  • Knowledge of current social science and humanities literature on the role of science in society, particular that on science and religion/nonreligion
