The McMaster Platelet Immunology Laboratory (MPIL) performs comprehensive research and diagnostic testing to investigate immune-mediated platelet disorders that lead to increased clotting such as COVID-19 vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia (VITT), heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT), thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) as well as disorders that involve prolonged bleeding immune thrombocytopenia (ITP).

MPIL is the diagnostic center for HIT in Canada and recently also became the Canadian diagnostic center for VITT testing funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC).

As a result, MPIL has a biobank of several thousand patient samples, which represents a unique opportunity in translational medicine to discover diagnostic markers and disease mechanisms.

MPIL is headed by Dr.

Ishac Nazy (PhD), the Scientific Director of MPIL and Associate Professor in the Departments of Medicine and Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences.

The overall goal of Dr.

Nazy's research program is to investigate immune-mediated platelet disorders while providing a training environment that provides exposure to advanced scientific expertise in the fields of biochemistry, immunology, molecular biology and hematology.

MPIL was recently recognized for its excellence by McMaster University and was awarded the President's Award in 2021. MPIL falls under the newly established Michael G. DeGroote Centre for Transfusion Research.

The Post-Doctorate Fellow will be responsible for:

  • Developing and executing laboratory research about Platelet Immunology and Hematology under the academic supervision of Dr. Ishac Nazy.
  • Interacting with a multidisciplinary team, including research scientists, at McMaster University, Hamilton Health Sciences and national and international academic collaborators.
  • Leading meetings with collaborators, stakeholders and participants to communicate study results.
  • Knowledge translation activities, including presentation of findings at relevant conferences and meetings and writing and publication of scientific manuscripts.
  • Ensuring appropriate handling of data within the context of ethics approvals.
  • Assisting with mentoring and supervising undergraduate and graduate students working on related projects.
  • Actively seeking grant opportunities (e.g. from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research).

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD in a relevant discipline (e.g., Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Immunology and Hematology), completed within the last 5 years.
  • Advanced biology, biochemistry and molecular biology laboratory skills.
  • Excellent computer skills and experience with data management and analysis.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong publication and presentation track record in a related field.
  • Experience in dissemination of research and knowledge translation, with ability to present to a wide range of audiences.
  • Ability to independently organize workload, set goals, and work effectively towards deadlines.
  • Ability to effectively work both independently and collaboratively, including demonstrated leadership qualities and interaction with collaborators.
  • Experience and knowledge of hematology and immunology will be considered an asset.
