Orillia, Ontario, Canada Ministry of the Solicitor General Full time

The Ministry of the Solicitor General, Ontario Provincial Police, and the Commander of Field Support Bureau seeks a qualified person to provide emergency medical care and support to members of the public and to OPP members at OPP tactical incidents in a pre-hospital environment that may be in a remote or urban setting under the medical license and supervision of the OPP Physician.

Positions to be filled in the geographical areas of West Region (London), East Region (Odessa), Central Region (Orillia), Northwest Region
- (Thunder Bay and Kenora).

About Us:

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is one of North America's largest deployed police services with more than 5,800 uniformed officers, 2,400 civilian employees and 830 Auxiliary officers.

We provide essential services that ensure the safety and security of the people of the Province of Ontario.

The OPP is a division of the Ministry of the Solicitor General, the largest operational ministry in the province with a presence in every community across Ontario.

We are the largest police service in Ontario and the second largest in Canada.

The OPP TEMS Program was created within the OPP to enable Advanced Care Paramedics to provide emergency medical care to a variety of OPP tactical incidents, when necessary.

The OPP has been providing medical support in the field for over 20 years; however, there remains an ongoing need for our Tactics and Rescue Unit to have medical support.

To date OPP TEMS have been involved in a number of events, the most notable of these being the North American Summit, the National Day of Action, and the G8/G20 events.

The OPP Values promote always doing the right things for the right reasons, by:

  • Serving with PRIDE, PROFESSIONALISM and HONOUR.
  • Interacting with RESPECT, COMPASSION and FAIRNESS.
  • Leading with INTEGRITY, HONESTY and COURAGE.

OPS Commitment to Diversity, Inclusion, Accessibility, and Anti-Racism: We are committed to build a workforce that reflects the communities we serve and to promote a diverse, anti-racist, inclusive, accessible, merit-based, respectful and equitable workplace.

Visit the

OPS Anti-Racism Policy and the

OPS Diversity and Inclusion Blueprint pages to learn more about the OPS commitment to advance racial equity, accessibility, diversity, and inclusion in the public service.

We offer employment accommodation across the recruitment process and all aspects of employment consistent with the requirements of Ontario's

Human Rights Code. Refer to the "How to apply" section if you require a disability-related accommodation.

What can I expect to do in this role?: The Medics:

Advanced Care Paramedics have a strong medical background, are accustomed to working in a pre-hospital environment, and are able to perform medical acts with a physician's order.

The five teams are working under the medical license and supervision of Medical Director Dr. Andrew Reed, the OPP Physician.

The medics will continue to be employed as full-time paramedics with their own municipal ambulance services, and will be available to the OPP on an on-call basis, when off duty.

They must reside within 60 minutes of the tactical team to which they are assigned.

Emergency Response Teams (ERT), Urban Search and Rescue, Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosives Response Team (UCRT) and Tactics and Rescue Unit (TRU) teams that will use the medics are based in London, Orillia, Bolton, Kenora, Odessa and Thunder Bay.

The medics, who are already licensed according to the Ambulance Act of Ontario, each complete a 10 day initial training and then receive additional training in Public Order.

Training is based on the techniques of TRU and UCRT, enabling them to function within the OPP's programs as tactical medics.

They have also become certified under our program as advanced care medics.

Teams were exposed to the kind of high-risk scenarios they might be encountering in the field, and what their roles are within them.

How do I qualify?:

Mandatory:

  • Ability to pass an OPP background/ security investigation.
  • Current certification as an Advanced Care Paramedic according to the Ambulance Act of Ontario.
  • Ability to maintain certification as an Advanced Care Paramedic with a local base hospital and with the OPP Medical Program.
  • Must maintain an emergency patient care role at their EMS service. Any other roles (administrative, training, community paramedicine) which do not include regular emergency patient care will make them ineligible for the OPP TEMS program. All members are required to report any change of duty/advancement/promotion to the Commander of Emergency Response and to the OPP Physician.
  • Licensed as an Advanced Care Paramedic and currently employed and continue to be employed as a fulltime Advanced Care Paramedic with an ambulance service in Ontario to ensure familiarity and comfort with required medical procedures.
  • Ability to pass physical fitness testing.
  • Ability to pass
