What is the Sponsored Employee Program?

A unique, fast-paced professional development opportunity for community-minded individuals to join the United Way fundraising team for 16 weeks during the fall campaign, while retaining the salary, benefits and support of your usual employer.

Participants receive training in communication, storytelling, project management, database skills, and fundraising techniques as well as ongoing coaching and 1:1 mentoring.

A team of a dozen Sponsored Employees, from a broad range of sectors and experiences, come together as a team with a common cause:

providing practical support to the more than 500 United Way Elgin Middlesex workplace campaigns to secure the resources necessary to support over 50 essential local programs and help over 110,000 local people in need.

The program starts at the end of August and runs to early December. It has a proven track record for providing individuals with the training, experience and support you need to enhance your own career and increase your connection to your community


Between August 28th and December 15th 2023, Sponsored Employees from leading workplaces across our region will be seconded to help support and execute the annual United Way Elgin Middlesex Campaign.

The program is immersive, collaborative, challenging and positive. It is a full-time dedicated position, lasting for

16 weeks. The Sponsored Employees experience a unique fast-track professional development opportunity to enhance skills in facilitation, training, public speaking, project management, community development and fundraising, while working together with highly qualified staff to help create lasting change in our community

Monday, August 28th to Friday, December 15th, 2023


  • Access to a computer and cell phone (personal or workissued) is necessary, in addition to reliable internet at home.
  • Sponsoring organizations continue to pay their employees' salaries, benefits and incidental expenses, such as parking and mileage, throughout the secondment.
  • Employee must be available for fulltime, dedicated work for the duration of the opportunity.
  • The twoweek intensive team training period starting August 28th is required for the role.

Job Details

a Sponsored Employee, you will provide dedicated support to the United Way staff

  • Sponsored Employees work closely with United Way staff to:
  • be ambassadors for UWEM at workplaces and in the community
- provide support to workplace campaigns by assisting with campaign planning, developing campaign materials, facilitating training and working with employee groups
- promote the UWEM message and impact through social media, training sessions, presentations, workplace campaigns and individual meetings
- ensure workplaces and volunteers receive appropriate recognition and stewardship for their support
- assist with the planning, sponsorship and promotion for, and management of, community events
- attend virtual and in-person (where applicable) events, meetings and presentations
- monitor and track progress, provide feedback, collect data, and complete final reports

Job Requirements
- exhibit excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships and motivate others
- be a collaborative team player, with the ability to work with a diverse group including: community members (including those with lived experience), workplace ambassadors and management
- possess strong organizational skills and the ability to balance multiple priorities
- demonstrate effective verbal and written communication abilities
- be comfortable speaking or presenting in front of groups
- maintain a creative and solution-focused problem-solving approach and a growth mind-set
- have experience with Microsoft Office Suite and virtual meeting software (Zoom and TEAMs)
- exhibit a community-minded approach that is progressive, inclusive, dedicated and effective
