The Office of the Vice-President, Research and Innovation (OVPRI) establishes the strategic direction and oversees the administration of Toronto Metropolitan University's scholarly, research and creative activity (SRC) enterprise, including grants administration, external funding, SRC policies, partnerships and collaborations, commercialization, and business development.


The Opportunity:


The Research Ethics Administrator ensures effective day-to-day support of the University's Research Ethics Board (REB) and Animal Care Committee in the administration of the ethical review process.


Responsibilities include:

  • Assisting the Chair, Director, REB Manager and the Animal Care Committee in processing research ethics submissions through all stages of the review process, in accordance with the regulations and guidelines governing human research participants and animal research protection.
  • Making recommendations, providing advice, and participating in discussions of the REB and Animal Care Committee as an exofficio, nonvoting member of these committees.
  • Coordinating and attending REB and Animal Care Committee meetings as required, including providing administrative support, such as scheduling, preparing agendas and minutes, screening and reviewing protocols for risk assessment, and assisting with the preparation of communications, standard operating procedures and educational materials for the REB and ACC.
  • Assisting the REB and ACC Chairs and REB Manager with reviewing ethics protocols on panels or subcommittees as directed by the Chair of the REB or ACC.
  • Providing advice and assistance to faculty researchers and research personnel in the preparation and submission of their protocols either one on one, in groups (classroom or workshop format), or in formal presentations.
  • Collaborating with the appropriate internal and external bodies to promote, educate and support research ethics at Toronto Metropolitan University, and represent the University on research ethics issues both internally and externally, as required.
  • Promoting faculty member use of the Online Ethics Submission and Review System; instructing REB members, faculty researchers, student and staff researchers, as well as external researchers in effective access and usage of the Online Ethics Submission and Review system, including providing demonstrations.
  • Screening and reviewing ethics protocols, prior to formal review by the REB and Animal Care Committee, to ensure adherence to University policies and federal, provincial and, in some cases, international guidelines and legislation.
  • Providing recommendations to the Research Ethics Board/ Animal Care Committee on individual protocols, taking into consideration the wellbeing and potential risks and benefits to research participants, human or animal, who may require protection as dependent beings.
  • Assisting investigators/coordinators in meeting REB and ACC requirements.
  • Serving as a resource for REB and ACC members, research coordinators and investigators on ethics practices. Acts as a resource to the University community, including students, on procedures and issues in research ethics through workshops and presentations.
  • Participates in the drafting and revision of policy and procedures to ensure that the University conforms to established guidelines and policies.
