Your role

As Canada's national public broadcaster, diversity shapes the content we deliver every day. CBC/Radio-Canada is committed to reflecting Canada's diversity in its workforce, as well as across all of its platforms.

CBC Atlantic is looking for a creative, innovative and imaginative Producer. Reporting to the Senior Producer of Creative Content, you will create and commission compelling, original digital content that pushes the boundaries of our storytelling, and delivers a diversity of voices and experiences in all treatments.

Guided by the objectives of the CBC's Creator Network, you will help create and mentor a community of content creators, finding a home for their diverse perspectives at CBC Atlantic. You will work proactively with the Senior Producer of Creative Content and CBC programmers to identify the best opportunities and platforms for Creator Network content, and support the strategic rollout of that content. As the Atlantic regional contact for the Creator Network, you will work with colleagues nationally to share best practices, discuss strategies and brainstorm new opportunities. You will also coordinate business processes for the Atlantic Creative Content unit including issuing talent agreements and freelance contracts in accordance with CBC guidelines and maintaining content and creator tracking documents.

Your strength as a creative storytelling and ability to connect with potential sources, audience members and freelancers will be critical to reflecting a range of perspectives and developing projects that are both firmly rooted in this region and surprising to our audience. You will support emerging creators, take calculated risks, try new creative treatments that help stories resonate with diverse audiences, and critically review the success of each project. You will strengthen our internal culture by taking every opportunity to collaborate and share learnings.

This role requires an imaginative storyteller and relationship-builder with a strong sense of journalistic standards and practices, and ability to write and edit. Video skills are an asset, but an interest in learning new ways of video storytelling is more important, alongside a genuine interest in exploring digital storytelling tools. A passion for mentoring and interacting with those outside the CBC is key as well as an ability to communicate and share your work internally. Independent thinking, excellent organizational skills and the ability to juggle multiple projects on multiple timelines is essential.

Work must adhere to CBC journalistic and/or show policies, practices and standards.

The work can be done from any of the following CBC stations in the Atlantic: St. John's, Halifax, Fredericton, or Charlottetown.

Key Tasks

  • Contribute ideas for content and suggestions for treatment of original, compelling and people-focused stories in Atlantic Canada.
  • Develop contacts and connect with content creators and emerging talent from diverse and digital communities around the region.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with creators new to the CBC, creating a sense of belonging and mentoring them to develop pitches and share their voices.
  • Work with creators to ensure CBC business requirements are met.
  • Develop creative content for multiple platforms including writing, researching, editing, preparing questions, setting up shoots, developing the writing or ideas of others.
  • Direct hosts and/or talent, including providing feedback on presentation and/or performance.
  • Assign, coordinate, and/or supervise technical, musical, visual, and additional guidance to other personnel on assigned sessions/events.
  • Consult with other team members involved in the session/event to ensure optimal audio and video results, including creative and technical quality.
  • Provide feedback throughout the post-production process.
  • Adhere to the Journalistic Standards and Practices of the CBC.
  • Execute media agreements in conjunction with business and rights, and fiscal requirements.
  • Manage multiple projects on different timelines.
  • Communicate and collaborate effectively across multiple departments.
  • Plan and manage financial and production/resource requirements including the creative contributors and other participants, including the materials and the facilities.
  • Coordinate all rights clearances.
  • Execute a release plan for all platforms, including overseeing the creation of a blog post and digital social content.
  • In collaboration with editors, optimize all video content for YouTube and other social media platforms.
  • Look for opportunities to collaborate with various internal and external partners.
  • Attend all necessary program and planning meetings, including site surveys.
  • Act as a CBC ambassador in production and creative communities.

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

  • University degree or equivalent.
  • Three years' practical and relevant experience.
  • A strong sense of journalistic storytelling with an awareness of contemporary political, economic, cultural and social issues of importance to this community, paired with a good understanding of the needs of the Atlantic audience.
  • A deep understanding and appreciation of diversity of perspective, opinion and experience and the ability to tell stories from those perspectives.
  • Minimum two years relevant experience in content production and publishing (eg. editorial structures and calendars, video content production, social media content publishing structures).
  • Experience working with editorial copy and video, providing notes and feedback.
  • Knowledge and experience of best practices, tools and processes for publishing original online video.
  • Strong creative judgment, initiative and a high degree of responsibility for the quality of work throughout the complete production cycle.
  • Strong visual storytelling skills and experience giving stories different visual treatments, as well as an interest in exploring video storytelling.
  • Ability to seek out new voices and freelancers and develop relationships with audience members and potential collaborators and generate, pitch and pursue strong, creative and original story ideas and treatments.
  • Knowledge of the digital space and trends as well as social media.
  • Demonstrated connection to diverse communities in Atlantic Canada as well as a commitment to producing journalism for audiences that are often underserved and/or underrepresented.
  • Strong team player but an independent thinker.
  • Able to keep track of a number of simultaneous activities and prioritize and plan.
  • Strong critical and thinking skills (familiarity with CBC's Journalistic Standards and Practices is essential).
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, along with the ability to work under tight deadlines with multiple priorities interacting with different teams across the organization.
  • Prior experience in YouTube, Instagram, TikTok and other social video platforms are an asset.
