The Learning and Community Engagement creates meaningful connection with various audiences onsite and online through a wide range of visitor experiences.

Interpreters essential to this goal. They animate activities and workshops.

They lead guided tours and online sessions to make art from the National Gallery of Canada's collection accessible and relatable.

They are active key members of a dynamic team focused on engaging, interpreting, discussing, and creating opportunities for learning.

Interpreters facilitate activities with the Indigenous and Canadian collection, European and American collection, the contemporary collection, the Prints and drawing collection as well as a wide range of special exhibitions.

Indigenous Interpreters have an important role in sharing and presenting Indigenous artworks, cultural practices and other Indigenous ways of knowing and being to both Indigenous and non-Indigenous audiences.

Job Summary


Under the direction of the Manager, Youth, and School and Family Programs Manager, in the Learning and Community Engagement Department, the Indigenous Interpreter is responsible for delivering education and public programs to a variety of audiences such as adult, school and community groups; especially Indigenous audiences; leading family activities; gathering data for education program evaluation studies; and, assisting with special events.

Indigenous Interpreters also participate in initial and on-going skill and content training.

They will also work with the support of Indigenous Educator(s), and in conjunction with the Gallery's Indigenous Ways and Decolonization Department.

As a part-time employee you will be guaranteed a minimum of 12 to 18 hours weekly. The work schedule will fluctuate based on the needs of the Department.
The schedule includes days, evenings, weekends and holidays.

Requirements:

  • You have knowledge in Indigenous art and culture and in one or more of the following fields: Interpretation, Museology, or Education, or an acceptable combination of education, experience, and training.


You possess a good understanding of Indigenous pedagogies and ways of being and knowing related to Indigenous artistic and cultural practices.


  • Knowledge of or experience with an Indigenous language would be considered an asset.
  • Acknowledgement of a bilingual (English and French) work environment and a willingness to collaborate with colleagues to provide services to the public in both languages.
  • 12 years' experience working with Indigenous individuals and communities.
  • Enthusiastic, energetic with excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to respond to the needs and interests of visitors of all ages.
  • Good communication and organizational skills.

  • Must meet the bilingual requirement to be invited to the interview process.
