Job Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Indigenous Engagement Specialist to join our team at the National Capital Commission. As a key member of our Partnerships and Engagement team, you will play a critical role in providing advice, planning, and implementing partnerships, indigenous outreach activities, and Indigenous engagement initiatives to support our duty to consult and reconciliation activities with indigenous community members.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide advice on Indigenous consultations in the context of impact assessments and indigenous traditional knowledge.
  • Draft correspondence, develop workshops, analyze feedback, and prepare reports to support decision making.
  • Develop consultation plans, written and visual materials for various audiences.
  • Manage risks and resolve complex issues.
  • Interpret and apply relevant policies and legislation.
  • Analyze data and write reports.

Requirements

  • A degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with an acceptable specialization in Communications, Indigenous Studies, Public Relations, Political Science, Environmental Studies, Urban Planning, or an acceptable combination of education, training, and/or experience.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in Indigenous engagement, stakeholder or community engagement, and relations.
  • Experience in project management or event management.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous communities, objectives, structures, and processes.
  • Knowledge of stakeholder engagement, community relations, and public consultation approaches and best practices.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of environmental legislation and processes relevant to Indigenous peoples' engagement and consultation.
  • Knowledge of environmental review processes or urban planning processes.
  • Knowledge of relevant policies and standards such as the UNDRIP, Accessible Canada Act, GBA+.
  • Experience working with federal departments, agencies, Crown corporations, and other levels of governance in the achievement of common objectives as they relate to Indigenous engagement and consultation.

Working Conditions

  • Possess or eligible to obtain Secret security clearance.
  • Linguistic profile: Bilingual BBB.
  • Position is in the National Capital Region. The person selected for this position must reside within a commutable distance from the workplace.
