JOB DESCRIPTION:


A Constituency Assistant is a confidential employee responsible for the administration of the Constituency Office of a Member of the Legislative Assembly.

Under the general supervision of the MLA, duties may include:

  • Providing assistance and advocacy for constituents in their dealings with the provincial government, either directly or through appropriate referrals.
  • Supporting the MLA's work within their communities through community outreach and liaison.
  • Providing information to constituents about provincial government legislation and policies, including the MLA and government's position on provincial issues.
  • Preparing communications materials, including advertising, householders, and mailings by the MLA, newsletters, websites and social media accounts.
  • Managing the daytoday operations of the Constituency Office, including correspondence, bookkeeping, information management and other office duties, as required.
  • Recruiting, training and supervising Constituency Office volunteers and practicum students, as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to write clearly, concisely and professionally for a wide variety of audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective information and advocacy strategies and to exercise diplomacy and political judgement.
  • Experience with active listening, referral and advocacy.
  • Ability to administer the various aspects of opening a new community office including budgeting, purchasing, and computer skills that will help grow the database and familiarize the community with the role of the MLA and his constituency office.
  • Demonstrated strong organizational skills, time management and independence.
  • Knowledge of the structure and policies of the New Democratic Party and a fundamental knowledge of the role of the three levels of government.
  • Specific knowledge of the constituency of Surrey-Cloverdale including the history and challenges of the community and its residents; including local businesses, the agricultural community, and their key issues.
  • Specific knowledge of local community groups, including not for profits and athletics would be an asset.
  • Specific knowledge regarding the demographics of the constituents in this geographically large constituency.
  • Experience with various current land use matters and future growth as it applies to land use.
  • Community minded and interested in helping develop and executing a strong outreach plan.
  • Experience working independently and with flexibility including evenings, weekends and some holidays.
  • Specific knowledge of significant cultures within the constituency would be an asset.

OTHER DETAILS

  • This is a temporary posting to cover a shortterm leave with an uncertain return date. There is the possibility of an extension to the end date, as well the possibility of this position being converted to permanant, fulltime.
  • Benefits as per the collective agreement. Temporary employees receive 4% of base pay in lieu of benefits, and 6% in lieu of vacation.
  • This is a bargaining unit position: BCGEU Local 70
