Medical Lab Technologist, Microbiology – BC Children's and Women's Hospital & Health Centre

What you'll do

Tests clinical and other specimens using various microscopy methods, bacterial culture, tissue culture and nucleic acid techniques, and evaluates and verifies results according to established procedures. Identifies cell types, bacteria and yeast, using the Gram stain, fluorescent microscopy and molecular techniques and reports results using the results to interpret specimen quality and various pathological processes. Subtypes bacteria by serotyping and using techniques such as PCR, PFGE and other methods. Performs bacterial culture, judges bacterial growth both qualitatively and quantitatively, and, using a variety of techniques, determines the significance of the culture results. Performs susceptibility testing by utilizing automated and manual procedures and uses available resources to accept results or perform additional testing if necessary; recognises when to report or suppress susceptibility testing results. Prepares stock solutions and reagents following standard operating procedures.

What you bring

Certification with the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS). Graduation from a recognized program in Medical Laboratory Technology Two years recent, related experience in Microbiology or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Demonstrated ability to operate equipment and related software. Demonstrated physical ability to perform the job. Awareness of and commitment to learning and understanding the Truth & Reconciliation Commission's 94 Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight Report (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), and other related reports. Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act As a strong asset for consideration, we are looking for our successful candidate to have: Knowledge of social, economic, political and historical realities impacting indigenous communities and familiarity with Indigenous Cultural Safety and anti-racism and accompanying reports (BC DRIPA, TRC, etc.).
