Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada BC Children's Hospital Full time

Medical Microbiologist
Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine
BC Children's Hospital
Vancouver, BC

BC Children's Hospital (BCCH) cares for the province's most acutely ill or injured children and youth, provides developmental and rehabilitation services to children and youth throughout BC, and offers a broad range of health services.

BCCH also operates a wide number of specialized health programs, is a leading acute care teaching facility, and conducts research to advance health and care through the BC Children's Hospital Research Institute and in partnership with the University of British Columbia.

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the BC Children's and Women's Hospitals is seeking a qualified and highly motivated individual with excellent communication skills to join the Division of Microbiology, Virology and Infection Control, located in the heart of Vancouver, on British Columbia's West Coast.

The Department provides the province's pediatric and obstetric populations with tertiary/quaternary laboratory care.

The Division is responsible for providing academic pediatric and maternal-fetal medicine diagnostic services for the province of BC, with a focus on rapid bacteriology and virology testing, including an extensive menu of microbiological nucleic acid amplification tests.

Infection control coverage is also provided for all of the Provincial Health Services Authority programs.

The successful candidate will provide Medical Microbiology (0.8 FTE) and Infection Control services (0.2 FTE), including participation in the on-call roster.

Scheduling of clinical work within the microbiology service will be determined by the Division Head in conjunction with Division Microbiologists and will consider the needs of the Division and individual interests and skills.

For the IPAC component, the successful candidate would report to PHSA Medical Affairs.

The microbiologist will be required to build relationships and provide prompt and expert consultative services to physicians and other health care providers.

Support will be provided to the Infection Control Program at PHSA, with a focus at BC Children's and Women's Hospitals.

Daily meetings occur with Pediatric Infectious Diseases, Infection Control and the Antimicrobial Stewardship Pharmacist. The microbiologist will be expected to be actively engaged in academic teaching and research.

The successful candidate will be recommended for appointment to the University of British Columbia (UBC), in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, at an academic or clinical rank dependent on experience and qualifications.

For consideration, candidates must be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians & Surgeons of British Columbia and must have obtained a Fellowship in Medical Microbiology from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or hold an equivalent qualification, by the time of appointment.
