Skill UP Employment Placement Specialist - Edmonton

the challenge

Skill UP is a new employment training program targeting newcomers in Edmonton and Calgary, interested in working in the skilled trades in Alberta.

The objective of the program is to develop the foundational and technical skills of newcomers in Alberta to improve job readiness, work placement, job retention and success in the work place.

120 newcomers (60 in Calgary and 60 in Edmonton, cohorts of 20) will be selected to participate in this 17-week training program that has two components: Skills for Success training and targeted technical skills training in either industrial insulation or advanced construction.

The eight-week 'Skills for Success' component will be broken down into two sections: transferrable skill development (Communication, Creativity & Innovation, Problem Solving, Digital, Collaboration, Adaptability), and foundational skill development (Numeracy, Writing, Reading).

Transferrable skills will allow newcomers to succeed in the workplace, as well as help with integration in all aspects of life in Canada.

Foundational skills will be integrated into the preparation for the apprenticeship entrance exam for certified trades in Alberta.

The nine-week 'Technical Skills' Component will focus on the construction sector and will provide targeted skills training to meet the current and future requirements for the skilled work force within this industry.

Participants will choose training delivered by the Local 110 Union for Heat and Frost Insulators and Allied Workers ('Local 110) or training in Advanced Construction provided by the General Construction Group of Companies (GCS)/Omnia Training.

The Employment Placement Specialist facilitates employment placement of our participants into Edmonton's labour market.

By utilizing knowledge about the local, regional and provincial labour market, hidden job market opportunities will be uncovered and employment opportunities will be developed for the mutual benefit of our immigrant job seekers and employers.

Employment Placement Specialist will work closely with employers and the SkillUP team to match participants with sustainable jobs and other employment-related capacities within the labour market.
