Learning Communities and Academic Advisor:

Primary Purpose:

This position supports the implementation, delivery and assessment of programs and strategies for enhancing student success with the College of Education through the College Learning Communities initiative and academic advising.

As part of the Programs Office team, the position creates and supports collaboration and team problem solving. There will be daily contact with students, fellow Programs Office staff, College employees, and other campus student support services.

The Advisor works in a busy, student-centered team environment, involving a high degree of autonomy, initiative and independence within the reporting structure.

The work requires an open mind, a flexible personality, innovative thinking, good judgment, an ability to manage stressful or sensitive situations, and a strong commitment to creating an exceptional student experience for a growingly diverse student population.

The work also requires knowledge of, and ability to work across, the various undergraduate teacher education opportunities provided by the College or in partnership programs, including the Indian Teacher Education Program (ITEP), the Saskatchewan Urban Native Teacher Education Program (SUNTEP), and other off-campus programs.


Typical Duties or Accountabilities

  • Supports and assists with the growth, delivery, and development of the College Learning Communities.
  • Supports and assists in the recruitment, selection process, and mentorship of education peer mentors.
  • Supports students in selecting and registering in Learning Communities in collaboration with the administrative assistant.
  • Supports Learning Community program promotion and communication.
  • Undertakes necessary training to keep abreast of technological utilities/platforms, as required by learning community remote options.
  • Works closely with the Learning Communities Coordinator to support evaluation of, and revisioning, of Learning Communities each year.
  • Recruits involvement in Learning Communities from educational partners, faculty/staff, and other potential guests.
  • Participates in assessing the outcomes of the Learning Communities project.
  • Provides academic and holistic advising to students, which may include short term, solution focused counseling strategies, goal setting, action planning, referrals and evaluation of degree completion plans, general and academic advising.
  • Encourages student persistence and success by supporting effective transition to the university learning environment.
  • Understands and participates in advising strategies that acknowledge individual characteristics of the student.
  • Practices culturally competent advising by working and responding in a manner that acknowledges and respects individuals' cultural beliefs, attitudes, behaviours, and customs.
  • Maintains direct and ongoing contact with students.
  • Understands and abides by confidentiality practices.
  • Partners with internal and external stakeholders to identify, adopt, implement, and evaluate best practices in student retention/persistence, recruitment, orientation, holistic advising, web strategies, and publications for students (i.e.
TLSE, SECC, departments, faculty, etc.).

  • Liaises with internal and external stakeholders to provide effective, integrated student services, ensuring College academic regulations and processes are followed.
  • Ensures that accurate records are kept.
  • Contributes to a positive, diverse, and inclusive work and learning environment by actively engaging in mentoring, selfawareness learning opportunities, relationship building, and professional communication, etc.

Education:
An undergraduate University degree preferred, an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered

Experience:
A minimum of three years working in post-secondary institution serving students.

Considerable knowledge of the University's academic and administrative structures and processes, including working knowledge of the Student Information System (SiRIUS) is an asset.


Skills:

Familiarity with MS Publisher, Word, Excel, WebEx, Blackboard, and Canvas; ability to empathize with and provide excellent service to students; effective organizational and communication skills, both written and verbal; ability to maintain attention to detail, and an approachable demeanor under stress; ability to effectively and accurately assess student needs; excellent intercultural communication skills; effective interpersonal skills and demonstrated public relations skills including the ability to handle interactions with tact, discretion, courteously, confidentially and with cultural sensitivity; proven record of taking initiative and follow through; ability to support the design and delivery of presentations and group sessions; ability to design and present material to group sessions; and the ability to convey complicated and detail-heavy information with clarity and precision.
