Academic Advisor:

Primary Purpose:

This position supports the implementation, delivery and assessment of programs and strategies for enhancing undergraduate student success with Indian Teach Education Program through academic advising and administrative support.


Typical Duties or Accountabilities:

  • Supports intensive academic programming, including updating electronic and paper academic profiles for Indian Teacher Education Program students in the College of Education through regular student contact.
  • Maintains accurate student programs and confirms all students meet the requirements of the Bachelor of Education program.
  • Provides information to prospective applicants regarding academic requirements, admissions and registration.
  • Maintain student spreadsheets including overall student lists with teaching areas as well as graduation.
  • Ensures all policies and procedures are adhered to including those for registration as well as admissions through convocation.
  • Refer to appropriate onand offcampus agencies, programs or supports to promote mental health and academic success.
  • Practices culturally relevant advising by working and responding in a manner that acknowledges and respects individuals' cultural beliefs, attitudes, customs, and characteristics of the student.
  • Encourages student persistence and success by supporting effective transition to the university learning environment.
  • Provide Field Experience with accurate information for student teaching and practicum placements.
  • Present student cases to the Student Affairs and Academic Standards Committee (SAASC).
  • Participate in various college and university committees when necessary.
  • Establishes and maintains relationships with as well as corresponding with First Nations postsecondary counselors, First Nation directors, College of Education staff, university staff, faculty and instructors.
  • Assist the ITEP staff with events such as registration seminar, orientations and cultural activities.
  • Assist EDLC 101/102 with various activities as related to course, may assist with planning and instruction
  • Understands and abides by confidentiality practices.
  • General office duties as required.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education:

Bachelor of Education Degree, valid Saskatchewan Teaching Certificate or the ability to obtain such as well as related experience working with and knowledge of provincial and First Nations curricula in Saskatchewan.

Knowledge of First Nations, Metis and Inuit cultures, protocol and perspectives. Knowledge of the College of Education courses, policies and degree requirements.

Skills:

Effective interpersonal skills and demonstrated public relations skills including the ability to handle interactions with tact, professionalism, discretion, courteously, confidentiality and with cultural sensitivity; ability to adapt to and work in a fast-paced changing environment; ability to establish and maintain positive partnership and working relationships with diverse teams of people inside and outside the College of Education; sound judgment, tact, discretion and professional integrity; attention to detail; effective communication skills, both written and verbal; ability to work effectively with students and faculty; self-motivated and organized with the ability to work independently and confidentially as well as part of a team; ability to set priorities and work within deadlines; time management skills; demonstrated effective organizational skills; proven ability to work on multiple projects with competing demands to meet deadlines; ability to solve problems in a proactive manner and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardizations exist; attention to detail and demonstrated ability to organize events and projects.

Only graduates of ITEP, SUNTEP or NORTEP will be considered for the position.
