Stewart Homes, a leader in high quality residential group care for medically fragile and developmentally delayed children and young adults, seeks an experienced Maintenance Coordinator to perform light repairs and maintenance on the grounds of its five residential group homes and head office in the Peterborough Area. This position is a full-time position with health benefits for you and your family. A work vehicle and tools will be supplied.

Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Maintenance Coordinator will carry out the following duties:

  • Perform maintenance and light repairs
  • Perform routine seasonal landscaping on the grounds; weeding, branch trimming, snow shoveling, fence repair
  • Drywall repair; mudding, taping and sanding
  • Painting and touching up of interior and some exterior walls, trim and ceilings
  • Troubleshoot and repair doors and windows to maintain safe operation
  • Assistance ensuring routine maintenance of vehicles is achieved
  • Routine checks of building systems equipment as assigned
  • Undertake light installation or basic carpentry (e.g. repair, modify or build cabinets, hang/reinforce shelves shelves)
  • Light repair of equipment or appliances; includes changing locks
  • Coordination of and assist tradespeople with electrical, plumbing or HVAC repairs
  • Undertake duties as assigned or emergency tasks (e.g. shoveling snow)
  • Identify and report the need for major repairs
  • other duties as assigned; garbage removal, moving furniture

Knowledge and Skills Required

  • Proven experience in home maintenance and repairs in a construction, renovation or 'handywork' position
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and within a team as necessary;
  • Demonstrated ability to take direction;
  • Demonstrated ability to safely use hand and power tools, lawn and garden equipment etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot tools and equipment;
  • Basic understanding of electrical, plumbing or HVAC systems;
  • Basic math skills;
  • Good communication ability, in English;
  • Well-organized and apt in problem-solving;
  • Demonstrated ability to work safely and respectfully in a busy home environment;
  • Attention to detail.

Physical demands will include:

  • Short and long stretches of lifting, crouching and bending;
  • reaching and carrying equipment;
  • moving furniture up and down stairs;
  • lifting up to 50lbs frequently, up to 100lbs occasionally

Hiring Criteria

Stewart Homes provides care services in residential homes, therefore applicants should have hands-on experience with home maintenance repairs in construction, renovation or in a handyperson capacity.

  • 3-5 years experience working in related maintenance, light renovation or handyworker position;
  • Strong recommendation from previous employer(s);
  • Respect for the dignity and privacy of the individuals supported at Stewart Homes;
  • Must maintain at least G2 driver's license and a vehicle in good condition for business purposes, including occasional travel to all of the organization's residences and properties;
  • Given the independent nature of the position and the vulnerability of our clients, the successful candidate will be required to provide an up to date Criminal Record with a Vulnerable Sector Check and provide documentation of compliance with our vaccination policies. COVID-19 vaccine is an important requirement for the safety of our residents and 3 doses are required. The flu shot is highly recommended.

Pay: $26.76 per hour
