The Market Analyst, Crude provides market fundamentals, short/medium term supply/demand analysis, and trader support for Supply and Trading's crude oil and diluent related activities. In addition, this position will support ad hoc requests from Commercial Senior Management, Commercial groups, Chief Economist, Investor Relations, and Downstream. Responsibilities may include:
  • Developing a comprehensive understanding of commodity trading, including key supply/demand regions, logistics assets, storage facilities, and financial instruments used to hedge positions in these markets. An understanding of key trading strategies is crucial for success.
  • Performing crude & diluent market analysis to develop and support business objectives, specifically:
    • Developing and maintaining supply and demand models. This will involve working closely with trading to understand the market and trends, incorporate downtime, seasonal cycles, macroeconomic variables and utilize import/export data to ensure the models are accurate and accepted by trading.
    • Identify market anomalies and communicate to trading on what physical market and forward market changes might occur.
    • Analysing portfolio customer profiles in key target countries/markets including industry oil sands projects, dilbit vs synbit netbacks and refinery demand/values.
    • Performing actual and projected tariff analysis and alternate logistical cost comparisons.
    • Coordinating analysis with Value Chain Optimization groups in Houston.
  • Providing support to groups/individuals requiring Commercial input or market analysis, including driving LRP development for Canadian crudes/diluent.
  • Performing project economic modelling & analysis as required.
  • Creating & maintaining a Canadian Metrics package with focus on, key indicators and company successes/highlights.
  • Supporting strategy development work for Supply and Trading groups as required.
  • Gaining consensus and trust across multiple functional areas within and external to Commercial to build a common vision and direction.
  • Facilitating corporate approval processes by:
    • Standardizing process and templates to be used by the Commercial group in Calgary (aligned with other regional offices) for structured deal / project approval process in line with corporate guidelines and global Commercial best practices.
    • Preparing appropriate approval documents for internal management approval of Commercial deals (including white papers).
    • Preparing economic justification models consistent with corporate guidelines for approval of structured deals.
  • Working with global Supply/Trading Commercial Development and Market Analysis & Strategy staffs in Houston to leverage resources/skills, share best practices and provide a global perspective on analysis.
  • Working with 3rd party consultants and brokers to understand and evaluate their views on commodity movements and factor those into development of P66 market view.
Required Qualifications:
  • Legally authorized to work in job posting country
  • Bachelor's degree
  • 1 or more years of experience in the energy industry
  • Proficient economic analysis, data management, modelling and/or investment appraisal skills
  • Intermediate level of proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
Preferred Qualifications:
  • 3 or more years of commercial supply and trading experience, with knowledge/understanding of crude and diluent markets
  • Technical background (i.e., process engineering) would be beneficial
  • Working programming knowledge of Visual Basic, Python, SQL, Tableau and/or R
  • Working knowledge of statistical modeling software, SQL or other database software, and economic model development
  • Self-starter with high degree of personal drive and initiative
  • Strong written, oral communication and presentation skills
  • Extremely reliable and thorough with proven organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with ability to work in high pressured environment on a broad range of activities and to prioritize workload to meet challenging deadlines
  • Strong willingness and ability to support internal customers in business requirements and ability to network effectively to achieve goals
  • Collaborative team player with ability to work constructively within a close and often demanding teamworking environment
  • Ability to interface effectively with external customers, counterparties, JV partners, consultants and CAPP employees
