THE ROLE
This role is based on facilitating preventative maintenance and executing projects associated with North Vancouver School District (NVSD) lands, site services and infrastructure.
The incumbent will work with skilled and semi-skilled employees and contractors engaged in maintenance, alteration, installation and a variety of construction, grounds maintenance, and landscaping work on NVSD lands.
An employee of this class exercises considerable independent judgement and action in completing assignments. The incumbent is responsible for planning, assigning, checking, reviewing, and ensuring site work is performed to standard. The incumbent will provide oral and written instructions, which may be accompanied by plans or sketches. Unusual or difficult problems are referred to the maintenance manager.The incumbent will be required to plan and coordinate a variety projects, and may participate in the work as required.
Work may be reviewed in terms of conformance with standards and objectives. The performance management and direct supervision of the grounds workers will be the responsibility of the Maintenance Manager.The incumbent will be expected to administer and coordinate work utilizing the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) and other project management tools.
The incumbent will also demonstrate proven experience, and actively participate in OHS&E, and provide expertise and guidance to grounds workers engaging in work activities within the NVSD portfolio.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Thorough knowledge of the current standard practices, methods, materials, tools and equipment applicable to the horticultural, arboriculture, landscaping and civil works professions.
Considerable knowledge of the applicable by-laws, rules, regulations and codes governing the work performed.
Working knowledge of other trades necessary to perform the work.
Working knowledge of departmental functions, policies, practices and procedures.
Working knowledge of surveying and of elementary civil engineering practices and procedures.
Working knowledge of computer use and related software.
Ability to plan, allocate, check and review the work of employees and contractors engaged.
Ability to read and interpret engineering plans and survey notes, and make mathematical calculations and estimates.
Ability to adapt to ever-changing weather conditions and seasonal demands. For example, windstorms, extreme rain and flooding, snow events, etc.
Ability to maintain records, estimate material and time requirements and requisition parts and materials as required.
Ability to accept responsibility for work assignments and complete assignments in a timely manner using considerable independent judgement.
Ability to coordinate work effectively with staff, other trades and outside contractors.
Ability to establish effective working relationships with staff, other trades, outside contractors and the public and work in a team environment as necessary.
Strong communications skills and ability to develop positive relationships with external partner groups such as (municipal inspectors, recreation commission, vendors, and neighbours)
DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Completion of an apprenticeship in a relevant trade or diploma from an accredited post-secondary institution in the field of grounds and infrastructure management, arboriculture, horticulture, landscape technician, or equivalent.
Knowledgeable of the code requirements for site accessibility and play spaces and equipment.
Knowledgeable of the safe operation, maintenance, inspection and limitations of heavy machinery (excavators, backhoes, skid steer loaders, and dump trucks) and light duty equipment (chain saws, mowers, plows, salt spreaders, pipe inspections equipment etc.) utilized for grounds maintenance.
Knowledge and experience with tree safety and tree assessments.
Completion of a facilities management certificate or equivalent (i.e. APPA, BOMA, IFMA, LEED).
