The Office of the Alberta Health Advocates, comprised of the Mental Health Patient Advocate and the Health Advocate, strives to empower Albertans to be effective in their own care.

It's an office that provides support and promotes a health care system that is responsive and accountable to the people being served.

The OAHA listens to health related concerns, assists with ways of resolving concerns and has the ability to conduct investigations or reviews into specific complaints related to mental health patient rights and the Alberta Health Charter.


We have two positions reporting to the Director:

Manager, Advocate Representative oversees the front-line Advocate Representative (AR) team of the Office of the Alberta Health Advocates in the delivery of effective client services, guide the development and implementation of the centralized intake process and be knowledgeable in complaint analysis, complaint resolution, conducting reviews and investigations, formulating recommendations, compiling data and report writing.

Manager oversees the policy, business, and educational staff of the Office of the Alberta Health Advocates OAHA providing leadership, advice in the OAHA policy, strategy, and engagement. You will lead project teams to develop, assess and ensure policies and procedures are in place to manage the intake analysis and investigations, and foster awareness of the role of the office.

Employs knowledge of the health system to provide expert advice and clinical consultation from a client centered approach to the AR team that will best meet the needs of Albertans.

Ensures reviews and investigations are conducted in accordance with the Government of Alberta and legislative requirements.

Develops and directs effective and efficient intake processes to ensure responses to Albertans are provided in a coordinated and timely manner.


Driving for Results:

Develops and evaluates best practice methods for client services, policies and procedures to support the core Health Advocate and Mental Health Patient Advocate functions.


Develop Self and Others:

Fosters and develops the AR team's capacity in investigative and clinical skills, knowledge and abilities to conduct reviews and investigations and to work with clients, families and health service providers.

Provides guidance, coaching and mentoring to the AR team in performance planning, performance review and goal setting.

Develop Networks:

Builds and maintains relationships and partnerships with internal and external stakeholders to consult and collaborate on Albertans' issues and to develop and deliver education on topics related to the Health Advocate and the Mental Health Patient Advocate.


Building Collaborative Relations:

Engages complainants and other parties to the complaints to facilitate resolution, conduct research and analysis of information including legislation and regulations of various authorities, client medical records and other supporting documentation.

Qualifications:


A University Degree in a related field (health, social sciences, nursing, occupational or physical therapy, social work) with a minimum of four years of related experience.


Experience is required in:
- leadership experience working with vulnerable populations in emotionally charged situations
- complaint-handling
- conducting investigations
- research and analysis
- project management

The following are considered assets:
- working with legislation and developing and delivering training

Equivalencies maybe considered - directly related education or experience on the basis of:

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.
A valid Alberta driver's license is also required for occasional travel to various hospitals/communities across Alberta.
