Position Summary:
Advisor for the Animal Care Training Program at McGill University and affiliated hospitals. Advise researchers on training requirements, policies and guidelines.

Provide expert advice and guidance to researchers and animal facility staff in regulatory agency rules, regulations, and University policies and procedures.

Assess and certify qualifications and make recommendations, as part of the protocol approval process. Develop and maintain theory course and practical workshops in accordance with Canadian Council on Animal Care guidelines. Principal investigator on cross-campus training protocols; oversee training and certification of trainers. Chair (ex-officio) of the Training and Qualifications Working Group of the Animal Policy and Welfare Oversight Committee (APWOC).

Member of the software core support group, providing functional expertise on contact management, access management and training modules; participate in functional troubleshooting and testing of fixes and upgrades.


Primary Responsibilities:
Ongoing Training and Qualifications Approval

  • Participate in the approval process of Animal Use Protocols (AUPs) (Required step in the approval process). Review training of personnel on Animal Use Protocols and on amendments adding new personnel and advises researchers when additional training is required in order to meet approval requirements as per University policy. Provide guidance in obtaining the appropriate training. Followsup on training deficiencies and completes approval step when these deficiencies are cleared. Tracks changes to be made to animal use protocols during review such as personnel related activities, nonsurgical procedures, surgical procedures and euthanasia methods to be corrected upon protocol approval. Followup on assessment of acquired competence by animal users by liaison with the different animal facility instructors.
  • Assess nonMcGill training from other institutions in accordance with established standards and advises researchers on equivalencies, and additional requirements, if appropriate. Refers complex cases to the appropriate Animal Compliance Office staff and/or the APWOC Training and Qualifications Working Group for further research as appropriate.
Development of Training Program and Evaluation Instruments

  • Participate in the development, update and maintenance of the online course and tests, in accordance with specifications of the APWOC Training and Qualifications Working Group, University policies and CCAC Guidelines.
  • Supervise content and implementation of online theory course and testing material. Review theory course and test platforms and make appropriate recommendations.
  • Review test results, oversees data entry of information into database and provides training certificates.
  • Create training documents under the guidance of the APWOC.
  • Integrate new material and information pertaining to policies, regulatory framework, laboratory animal technology;
  • Ensure training follows Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) & National Institutional Animal User Training (NIAUT) guidelines.
  • Consult with other institutions' training program personnel to acquire new knowledge and sharing of best practices. Adapt other institutions' strategies and instruments to be used in the institution's context.
  • Attend conferences, participate in workshops and Webinars and liaise with Training Advisors from other Canadian universities, as part of the expected regular Continuing Education requirements of Animal Health Technicians and Animal Compliance Administrators, to keep knowledge and skills up to date. Contact outside groups to obtain training materials.
Principal investigator on an Animal Use Protocols for training workshops

  • If a Principal Investigator on an AUP, is responsible for the information in the protocol reflecting what is done in practical training workshops and reporting the number of animals used.
Participate in the development, update and maintenance of practical workshops content and documentation in accordance with specifications of the APWOC Training and Qualifications Working Group, APWOC policies and CCAC guidelines:

  • Supervise content and implementation of practical workshops.
  • Review of courses evaluations and complaints related to training program and refer to the Director and to the APWOC Training and Qualifications Working Group.
  • Oversee trainer certification. Provide training for and certify local trainers (_Train the trainer_ approach) and workshop instructors and carry out regular evaluation of their instruction skills. Develop training material. Advise in rules of conduct and maintaining a suitable learning environment. Maintain appropriate training skills, using University and outside resources.
