Note: This is for a 12-month full-time position for a leave coverage.

The Financial Support Specialist works together with the members of the firm's Accounting Team under the direction of the Financial Controller to provide accounting support to our legal professionals and the firm's clients.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assisting the Financial Controller with automating systems within the accounting department, including;
    • Assisting with software implementations.
    • Automating internal documents.
    • Streamlining documentation of accounting procedures including regular maintenance and updates.
  • Maintaining and overseeing the ExpensePoint Program.
  • Providing training and technical support to team members and other colleagues for all Accounts Payable processes, including ExpensePoint.
  • Providing backup and support to the Accounts Payable Assistant as required, including;
    • Processing of accounts payable and firm expenses.
    • Processing of employee expense reimbursements.
    • Processing of payments by cheque, visa, and online banking.
    • Monitoring and reconciliation of vendor accounts as required.
  • Reconciling Monthly Visa Statements
  • Assisting the Financial Controller with the month-end process, including;
    • Reviewing, analyzing, and reconciling GL accounts.
    • Processing monthly adjusting journal entries.
    • Preparing and remitting monthly GST and PST Returns
  • Assisting in the firm's Trust Accounting process in accordance with the Rules and Regulations set out by the Law Society of British Columbia, including;
    • Processing incoming Trust cheques and electronic deposits, including bank runs.
    • Preparing and processing client Trust cheques for review signature and distribution.
    • Preparing and processing Trust Memos and Deposit Slips for review and signature by responsible lawyers.
    • Preparing and Processing Matter-to-Matter Trust Transfer requisitions for review and signature by responsible lawyers.
  • Providing support and assistance to other members of the accounting team as required.
  • Attending meetings as required.
  • Assisting with other related duties as requested.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Minimum 5 years of accounting experience working in a professional environment preferably at a law firm.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration in Accounting;
  • Strong Technical skills including proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlooks; knowledge of SharePoint and Power Automate is an asset;
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills;
  • Excellent organizational skills with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail;
  • The ability to multitask, prioritize and work well under pressure and adapt to changing demands;
  • The ability to follow instructions and adhere to strict deadlines;
  • The ability to work independently and within a team;
  • A client-centered approach with the commitment to providing outstanding service;
  • The ability to exercise sound judgment, discretion, and confidentiality.
