We are looking for a full-time Laboratory Manager to support the RMP program.

Main Responsibilities are to maintain the technical and scientific support facilities in an uninterrupted manner and ensure smooth operation of the facility.

The Lab Manager acts as the first point of call for all laboratory related technical issues and maintains a close relationship with other departments and staff within the OHRI.


The individual will be responsible for the following:

  • Managing an annual budget for procurement of common laboratory supplies; maintaining sufficient inventory to meet daily/weekly/monthly needs and ensuring appropriate utilization, with a commitment to reducing costs and waste.
  • Supervising lab support technicians. Arranging and reassigning work schedules as required to ensure duties are covered during leave periods.
  • Inspecting and appraising problems with instruments and equipment, arranging timely repairs as required.
  • Reviewing specifications to determine future equipment purchases, investigating advantages and benefits and doing a cost comparison. Overseeing the correct and timely installation of new equipment; understanding running costs, maintenance and training requirements; arranging training on new equipment.
  • Acting as Representative at Lab Operations and Health and Safety meetings in order to present the concerns of the centre.
  • Liaising with supplier representatives to obtain product information and pricing.
  • Keeping an inventory of chemical waste, ensuring proper labelling and safe disposal according to hospital policy and encouraging proper disposal of waste. Maintaining and updating MSDS.
  • Maintaining a chemical inventory/database for common areas of the laboratory to facilitate searches.
  • Operate proteomics core resource facility
  • Receive and understand requests from scientists with respect to proteomics projects and proteomics analyses
  • Prepare samples for analysis
  • Perform the required analyses using an Orbitrap Fusion Lumos LC-MS platform
  • Perform bioinformatics using relevant software such as Mascot, MaxQuant, Scaffold, Skyline and/or Proteome Discoverer
  • Communicate project results to client researchers
  • Provide guidance/expertise to scientific investigators or research students who require assistance in designing their proteomics experiments
  • Maintain LC-MS/MS platform in working order; coordinate site visits from service contractors when required
  • Prepare chemicals and other materials as needed for laboratory work
  • I.T. tasks including data backups, software licenses and updates; coordinate with I.T. department and research administration when required.
  • Recommend and/or evaluate equipment for inclusion in research grant proposals
  • Prepare other reports as required
  • Conduct activities to promote awareness, understanding, and usage of proteomics services
  • Participate in continuing education and professional development activities to maintain competency and awareness of latest developments in proteomics
  • Maintain a clean and safe laboratory environment
  • Maintain proper records
  • Monitor inventory and place orders for replacement materials
  • Follow all laboratory safety policies

Basic Requirements (Education/Experience):

  • Master's Degree (M.Sc.), or equivalent or higher, in biological sciences, biochemistry or chemistry
  • Three to five years of experience in management and supervision of research and /or laboratory operations
  • Understanding of protein biochemistry at a minimum B.Sc. biosciences or chemistry level
  • Ability to communicate effectively with research professionals and research students to advance the progress of scientific projects
  • Ability to deal with people in a courteous and professional manner, in the context of providing a core facility service to the research community
  • LC-MS experience, preferably in proteomics
  • Ability to perform precise, repetitive work with diligence
  • Ability to perform fine work with small volume samples and laboratory instruments
  • Ability to work safely in a laboratory environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Extensive practical experience with proteomics technologies and tools including methodologies such as LC-MS, ingel digestion, iTRAQ/TMT, ETD, topdown analysis, targeted proteomics, Mascot, MaxQuant, etc.
  • Experience operating Thermo Orbitrap mass spectrometers

Contract Details:

This is a 2-year full-time contract with the possibility of renewal.

Salary:
Min:$41.028/hr - Max:$52.144/hr
