Health, Safety and Environmental Coordinator

Reporting to the Head of Administration, the HSEC collaborates with all departments regarding the Company's Health and Safety Program. They are responsible for researching, coordinating and executing health and safety programs, policies, procedures and training. Provide advice and guidance to managers, employees and JHSC members. Conducts risk assessments, H&S audits, incident investigations. Processes WSIB claims and assists in the return-to-work planning process.

This position is full time, Monday to Friday from 7:00am to 3:30pm. Work location is on site, at 1260 Old Innes Road, centrally located in Ottawa.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain the health and safety policy manual, create, review and update policies as required.
  • Coordinate, manage and communicate the health and safety program along with the related processes, procedures, and resources including SDS and WHIMIS labels.
  • Train employees in all areas related to health and safety including onboarding.
  • Coordinate WSIB claims, including completion of paperwork, issuing, and monitoring modified duties, administrating the safe return to work program for injured workers.
  • Chair the Joint Health and Safety Committee by participating in meetings; preparing agendas; taking and distributing minutes. Complete building inspections, fire extinguisher inspections, conduct incident investigations; prepare reports and make recommendations for corrective actions; track and follow-up on recommendations.
  • Deliver first aid to injured workers for minor injuries, assess for further evaluation. Manage the first aid logbook, and kit supplies.
  • Inventory of shop machinery, ensuring proper PPE and machine safety instructions are available.
  • Gathering and compiling data for environmental compliance, safety metrics and other reports as required.
  • Responsible for coordinating the safe disposal of chemical waste.
  • Participate in Pre-Safety Reviews and communicate with organizations to obtain quotes for safety related projects, tasks, etc.
  • Gather information relative to regulatory requirements, industry standards, and best practices to aid in the development of policies, procedures, and programs to ensure compliance with relevant legislation.
  • Other projects and related duties as required.

Requirements

  • Minimum 3-5 years of recent Health and Safety experience in a Manufacturing/Industrial Environment.
  • Post-secondary education in Occupational Health & Safety.
  • Understanding of the Occupation Health and Safety Act (OHSA), and Workplace Safety and Insurance Board System (WSIB).
  • Certified Joint Health & Safety Member with active registration.
  • Valid CPR/AED First Aid Training.
  • Experience in providing respirator training and fit testing.
  • Strong interpersonal and critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both written and oral.
  • Strong computer skills, Microsoft Office Suite (word, excel, power point).
  • Proven ability to compile notes, write reports, write clear concise emails, prepare presentations, follow guidelines, and pay close attention to detail.
  • Ability to obtain a Controlled Goods Security Clearance and a Canadian Reliability Level Security Clearance.
