Job Summary


The Research and Communications Assistant provides general support to FNHL's Research and Communication Officer (RCO) for the Unit's internal and external communications and research activities as directed by the RCO, and at times by the Associate Director and Director of the First Nations House of Learning.

This position requires a working knowledge of Indigenous student issues and services offered by FNHL and other departments at UBC.

This position may require working outside of normal hours in support of FNHL events on an infrequent basis.


The communications aspect of this role sees the incumbent providing general support to FNHL's RCO as it pertains to the Unit's internal and external communications activities.

Primary duties include producing the Unit's weekly student newsletter during Winter Session, and developing and updating content for the Unit's website, social media channels, and digital signage.

Other duties include, but are not limited to, posting events to the UBC Calendar, reporting analytics, producing branded promotional materials, identifying potential stories, contributing draft content for articles, providing general editorial support, and responding to internal and external requests for information and direction.


The research aspect of this role sees the incumbent providing general support to the RCO as it pertains to the Unit's involvement in monitoring and reporting on the University's implementation of the Indigenous Strategic Plan (ISP).

Duties include, but are not limited to, organizing meetings and taking notes, communicating with Faculty personnel, organizing Faculty and Unit implementation reports, extracting and tabulating data, and supporting the creation, evaluation and presentation of FNHL surveys.

Organizational Status

Reports to the Research and Communications Officer and occasionally takes direction from the Director or Associate Director.

The position will interact with and collaborate with FNHL's Student Engagement and Community Programs team, and other staff, and occasionally with faculty, students, and staff from other units.

Work Performed

Work both independently and closely with the Research and Communication Officer to perform the following:1) Research, write, edit and layout

2) Under the direction of the RCO, develop and post content to the Unit's website,
_The Indigenous Portal, including social media channels, digital signage board, and the UBC Calendar_

3) Report website and social media analytics to the RCO

4) Design FNHL branded promotional materials for social media and other uses

5) Provide general editorial support for the Unit's communication activities

6) Respond to inquiries related to the above responsibilities

7) Organize Faculty and Unit ISP implementation reports, which involves communicating with Faculty personnel to gather digital reports and review them for data quality and filing them on MS Teams or another storage location, as well as organizing meetings and taking notes.

8) Extract and tabulate data from ISP implementation reports for the RCO and/or designated others.

9) Support the creation, evaluation and presentation of FNHL surveys and their results to internal staff and possibly other university staff

10) Other tasks related to regular duties

Consequence of Error

This position is expected to exercise a high degree of maturity, autonomy and discretion while working under broad guidelines, including the UBC's

Indigenous Peoples:

Language Guidelines, Guidelines for Respectful Image Usage, Brand and Marketing's Brand Guidelines and Best Practices, and the First Nations House of Learning's Style Guide.

The consequence of an error in this area could be very serious for the Unit and the University, as it concerns their public image, profile and reputation on a local, provincial, national and international level.

Incorrect or insufficient information on the website or in external communications may result in loss of support and embarrassment to both.
