In this role you will be responsible for the development and coordination of ministry information/reports, including ministerial information requests, meeting/event recommendations, briefings, correspondence, inquiry responses, and other reporting statistics that support the strategic decision-making process for executive management.
The Issues Advisor also analyzes and integrates information produced by ministry staff to ensure that information products related to operations, programs and services, policies and initiatives align with ministry and government priorities.
The ability to change directions quickly and re-prioritize activities in a high volume, highly complex and fast paced environment is essential to succeed in this position.
This role involves a strong component of strategic issues management and coordination - working closely with the Deputy Minister's Office, Ministry Correspondence Unit, other executive offices, as well as ministry staff on key background documents to support government decision making.
You will directly impact the service and information provided to ministry stakeholders and will act for the Chief of Staff as needed.
The Legal Issues Advisor is expected to competently manage intermediate to senior level legal matters with medium to high risk and complexity.
You will:
- Identify and research relevant legal issues
- Ascertain all relevant facts
- Research, review, and synthesize relevant case law, legislation, and policies
- Draft thorough and clear advice, identifying risk, and providing conclusions or options to mitigate risk
Qualifications:
To be eligible for consideration, you must possess a law degree and be a currently practicing member with the Law Society of Alberta.
Assets:
- Thorough understanding of department mandate, goals, policies, regulations, and government strategic directions.
- Specific knowledge of department planning processes and Minister/Deputy Minister correspondence guidelines.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, including superior legal writing.
- Strong organizational and prioritization skills for handling multiple assignments and demands.
- Excellent social research skills, policy analysis, and experience leading projects or committees.
