Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Georgia Strait Alliance Full time

Compensation:
$19/hour, plus vacation pay and sick leave

Preferred start date:
May 29th, 2023

Position duration: 8 weeks, 34 hours per week

Eligibility:

  • Due to funding restriction, the successful applicant must be 30 years or younger on the date of hiring; hold Canadian citizenship, permanent resident or refugee status; and live in one of the following locations:
  • East Vancouver
  • Nanaimo-Ladysmith
  • Richmond Centre
  • Burnaby North Seymour
  • Burnaby South
  • Surrey Centre
  • The applicant is expected to adhere to Georgia Strait Alliance (GSA)'s Covid19 Policy, which requires proof of vaccination in order to gather in either our Nanaimo or Vancouver offices. GSA also requires that all attendees at GSAhosted events provide proof of vaccination. In addition, GSA has a PPE (masks or other) protocol in place when engaging with the public. Where there is a bona fide religious or medical reason why a vaccination cannot occur, GSA will accommodate such requests.

About the position:

Working closely with our two Community Organizers, you will be coached to carry out outreach activities on behalf of the organization in support of various campaigns and programs, such as visiting and being out in neighbourhoods, community hubs, public spaces and events to establish conversations on various issues; tabling at public events; creating social media posts; etc.

Additionally, you will be using tracking tools (spreadsheets, online forms, etc.) to document your activities, and will be encouraged to suggest and implement additional engagement methods, or visit additional locations that may help increase the reach or impact of our work.

With our support, your main priority will be to door-knock in strategic locations using materials such as an Extreme Weather survey, document the answers and comments of community members, and encourage folks you meet to participate in project activities (such as attending events in their community, etc.).

This position will require that you are available during the evenings twice a week (for door-knocking) and occasionally on the weekends (for tabling, attending events, etc.).

You will do great in this position if you are interested in topics such as climate change, biodiversity and ecosystems protection, community engagement, inclusivity and diversity, and are able to take initiative, particularly in starting and maintaining conversations with folks.

Having a keen sense of working as part of a team, and attention to detail when taking notes is also a must.

As long as you have energy, a positive attitude, and eagerness to talk to people about important issues, you would be a great addition to this project

Experience and Qualifications:

We understand that not all experience looks the same, and encourage applicants to share how their experiences relate to any and all the qualities below:

  • Ability to follow scripts in an engaging way
  • Ability to synthesize information and create content
  • Ability to engage and connect with folks of diverse backgrounds
  • Be part of a canvassing campaign (e.g. use a map to do outreach, compile talking points and reference materials, spend time at a public space and take initiative in talking to people, etc.)
  • Take initiative and be willing to try new things (e.g. approach folks proactively, try different greetings to see which ones work best, etc.)
  • Ability to participate in, help plan and organize public events

Location:
The position requires a combination of work done at home/remote, from our office, and in the field.

About Georgia Strait Alliance:

GSA is focused on protecting the health of the marine environment of the entire region of the Strait of Georgia (the northern arm of the Salish Sea).

Grounded in environmental justice, Georgia Strait Alliance mobilizes and supports collective action to protect the Salish Sea region.

We do this by:

  • Building and activating community power through relationship development and capacity building;
  • Fostering systems transformation by advocating for communityled initiatives;
  • Connecting people and place through engagement and awareness building; and,
  • Strengthening organizational health and equity by creating a supportive and safe working environment

Our values of collaboration, caring, courage, accountability, and interconnectedness guide us as we work toward our vision, and the spirit of 'alliances' that our founders nurtured is still present within GSA and in the way we work to protect this region.

As a primarily white-led organization, we are committed to change, to recognizing our responsibility to challenge and address harmful patterns in our work, and create a more diverse and equitable organization.

We are committed to ensuring that our mission is one that is inclusive of all communities and people, and we look forward to you joining us on this ongoing journey and bringing their unique perspective to our team.
