  • Job SummaryReporting to the Vice-President Finance and Operations (VFPO), the Associate Vice-President Financial Planning and Operations (AVPFO) provides leadership to a diverse portfolio of institutional planning and operational functions. The role works collaboratively with academic and administrative leaders to develop short
- and longer-term institutional plans (e.g. Campus Plan, Climate and Sustainability Plan, 5 Year Capital Plan, UVic Indigenous Plan etc.), budgets, funding strategies, and business cases in alignment with institutional strategic goals while ensuring institutional risk is considered and managed and resources are appropriately stewarded. To be successful in the role there must be an appreciation for and understanding of the University's academic mission and the student experience as well as institutional and departmental priorities and objectives. Valuing the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion, a desire to work collaboratively with diverse voices to accomplish these goals and objectives is essential.


While the AVPFO reports to the Vice-President Finance and Operations, they are accountable to and work directly with all members of the University of Victoria Executive team.

As a trusted advisor the role provides institutional leadership with unbiased advice to further university interests.


Together with the Associate Vice-President Academic Resource Planning, the AVPFO provides leadership to the development of the University's operating budget including revenue and expenditure forecasts and allocations in support of, and alignment with, the University's strategic and other institutional plans.

This position also chairs many institutional committees including all steering committees for capital projects.

In this capacity the AVPFO needs to understand and consider a diverse range of campus and broader community needs to ensure project success.

This work requires the AVPFO to engage across campus, to be able to translate financial and other information to a wide audience.

Creativity and adaptability are required to advance plans and support a variety of sometimes conflicting campus objectives and to ensure plans and systems continue to evolve to support institutional needs.


The AVPFO requires a high degree of collegiality and ability to guide complex decisions to enhance success of these initiatives and build lasting relationships.


The role must also foster key relationships across the public sector and is a key liaison with the Ministry of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills with respect to finances and capital projects and the Public Sector Employer's Council.
