The opportunity:


The Commissioning Editor, Documentaries will oversee the production, editorial content and completion of commissioned documentaries, commission digital video and related digital media projects.


Direct reports:
Independent Production Officer (1) Acquisition Officers (2).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage team, content and oversee all aspects of production of commissioned documentaries, commissioned digital video series and digital media projects (websites, apps, etc.).
  • In conjunction with the Head of Programming, define and execute content strategies for commissioning documentary programming and digital projects.
  • In conjunction with the Head of Programming, oversee creative and journalistic direction of all commissions.
  • Work with independent production teams to develop and deliver to completion documentaries, digital series and related digital content.
  • Provide editorial direction and coordinate delivery schedules for rough cuts, fine Cuts, and other required assets.
  • Manage Canadian Media Fund allocation for documentaries to grow audience onair and online with an emphasis on those audiences identified by TVO's strategic plan.
  • Review, assess and manage requests for independent funds (Bell, Telus, etc.), in conjunction with the Head of Programming and with business affairs.
  • Recommend the license fees of documentaries to put into development and production.
  • In conjunction with Head of Programming, set and implement the editorial strategy for the acquiring of content from domestic and international markets.
  • Manage the set budget and spending in accordance with projects: commissions, acquisitions, copros and prebuys.
  • In conjunction with the Head of Programming, relevant members of TVO teams and independent producers, assess and develop educational content.
  • Review quarterly current strategies and selections for licensing with Head of Programming and VP-CAD.
  • Report weekly (to Head of Programming and relevant team members) on progress of commissioned documentaries and digital projects.
  • Track developments in the documentary industry and on digital video platforms to evaluate their impact on TVO and strategize accordingly.
  • In conjunction with audience development and analytics teams, use data to inform commissions, acquisitions and the framing of related promotions.

What you will bring to TVO:

  • 5+ years of experience in managing legacy broadcast content and/or similar content on digital platforms preferably of a documentary and/or factual nature.
  • Journalistic storyproducing skills.
  • Working understanding of digital media including but not limited to key distribution platforms such as YouTube, Instagram and TikTok.
  • Organization skills, ability to manage multiple projects at once combining longterm, shortterm and fast turnaround projects
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, coupled with strong interpersonal skills
  • Experience working effectively at all levels of an organization and various disciplines
