The Humber Arboretum is a thriving natural ecosystem and outdoor learning space that advances the highest potential and well-being of the community through strengthening our relationships with nature and with each other.

Encompassing 100 hectares at the back of Humber College North Campus, the Humber Arboretum is free to visit and offers a variety of programming to both Humber College students and the general public.

It exists as a unique tri-partnership between Humber College, City of Toronto, and Toronto and Region Conservation Authority. The Centre for Urban Ecology (CUE) is home to the Humber Arboretum's educational programs and special events. What you will do:


Reporting to the Manager of the Humber Arboretum, the Outdoor Education Coordinator oversees the planning and development as well as assists in the facilitation of all Humber Arboretum educational programs in accordance with the Humber Arboretum Strategic Plan and the Humber College Academic Strategic Plan.

They provide strategic direction related to all educational programming, including but not limited to, marketing and promotion, staff recruitment and retention, funding initiatives, community partnership development, research, and the development of new educational program opportunities, both virtual and onsite.

They are responsible for developing and updating training materials, facilitating training, and supervising the daily activities of seasonal educational/camp staff teams of up to 16 members during outdoor education and camp program facilitation, and ensuring all relevant policies and procedures are followed, especially those concerning health and safety on site.

They monitor customer needs and resolve any issues that arise related to customer service and the daily operations within the Centre for Urban Ecology.

They respond to all enquiries related to educational programs, camps, community outreach and are the main liaison for these specific program areas and deliveries.


What you bring to the role:

Education


Three (3) year diploma or degree in a field such as Ecosystem Management, Urban Ecology, Environmental Studies or Outdoor Education.


  • Additional certifications in High Five
  • Healthy Child Devlopment, Project WILD/Below Zero.

Experience & Skills
Minimum 5 years of supervisory experience in a nature-focused day camp and/or outdoor education setting.

Minimum 10 years experience in the planning, development and facilitation of outdoor education experiences for all ages.

  • Experience planning and facilitating weeklong seasonal staff training for teams of up to 20 people.
  • Ability to plan, develop, and facilitate leadershipfocused programs in connection with the natural world for College and University students.
  • Skilled in the identification of local flora and fauna species found within the GTA.
  • Working knowledge of virtual programming tools like Mentimeter, Kahoot, Panopto, PowerPoint, Zoom, and Microsoft Teams.
  • Demonstrated experience in the accreditation process of the Ontario Camps Association's Year-Round Standards for camps and outdoor education centres.
