You will work with the City of Edmonton's Urban Planning and Economy Department within the Planning and Environment Services Branch to gain valuable professional experience as a heritage planner.


With a focus on the City of Edmonton's Cultural Commitments
to Safe, Helpful, Accountable, Integrated and Excellent, you will:

  • Facilitate the fulfillment of statutory requirements related to Municipal Historic Resource designation, including:
  • Engaging with heritage property owners
  • Assisting with the development of scope of rehabilitation and conservation work
  • Assisting with evaluation of construction quotes to identify grant funding consistent with City policy
  • Assisting with the preparation of Notices of Intention to Designate, designation bylaws, and Council reports and associated recommendations
  • Facilitate the identification of new historic resources and associated amendments to the Inventory of Historic Resources in Edmonton, including:
  • Researching and preparing Statements of Significance
  • Updating the Inventory in accordance with HRRP recommendations
  • Updating City of Edmonton internal database (POSSE)
  • Support heritage inventories, policy development and regulatory projects, including:
  • Assisting with the development of project terms of reference and communications and public engagement plans
  • Assisting with the review and refinement of public engagement materials
  • Assisting with ongoing communication and updates to relevant stakeholder groups, other City business areas, and the public
  • Assisting with reviewing consultant deliverables
  • Research and assist with the preparation of Council reports to inform the City's approach to placebased heritage management, including:
  • Assisting with the development of projections and identification of trends in order to proactively respond to emerging issues
  • Researching and reviewing best practices from other jurisdictions in order to evaluate their applicability in the context of Edmonton
  • Assisting with the preparation of Council reports and associated recommendations
  • Help improve the effectiveness of Edmonton's heritage management efforts

Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of a degree from a recognized Urban Planning, Architecture or Heritage Planning program within the last 2 years
  • Demonstrated ability using Google Apps
  • Excellent organizational and multitasking skills
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and ability to maintain strong working relationships
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a collaborative member of a team
  • Knowledge and/or experience in heritage planning including rehabilitation work, report writing, and/or conducting research on heritage buildings is considered an asset
  • Demonstrate service excellence, embracing diversity and promoting inclusiveness
