The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Alberta offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate engineering programs, creating the opportunity to pursue exceptional education with world-class instructors, hybrid learning environments, and hands-on lab, field, and internship experiences.

The Faculty of Engineering has five departments that occupy and manage space within 14 buildings owned by the University of Alberta on both North and South Campus.

The space includes education, administration, research, and student project space types.

Reporting to the Manager, Faculty Infrastructure, the Planning Technologist will support the Faculty of Engineering by coordinating facilities maintenance and renovation, space assignment requests, and infrastructure management.

Participate in space assignment requests and proposed infrastructure changes, develop requirements and understand the needs of the faculty and users, facilitate the collaborative development of project definition and scope, formulate solutions, and prepare space assignment recommendations to the Faculty of Engineering Infrastructure Planning Committee.

Liaise with colleagues in the Faculty of Engineering, and throughout the University including the College of Natural and Applied Sciences, and Facilities and Operations in the Vice President's office (Space Planners, Project Managers, Project Coordinators, Furniture Coordinator, Move Coordinator and Estimator) to solve and/or assist in furniture, space, construction solutions, moves or other related issues.

Fulfill program needs for short range planning, space planning, project coordination and facility management in response to the Faculty of Engineering's learning, research, and administrative priorities.

Work with the Faculty of Engineering project management software system to track and update space assignment projects to ensure engagement is timely and responsive; provide updates as required to Facilities and Operations for all data sources.

Work with the Facilities and Operations space planners, assist each department, group, institute and centre to implement a best practice approach when identifying space required for core activities, finding functional adjacencies, reviewing existing assignments, and identifying opportunities for improved optimization and utilization.

Maintain current occupancy information by documenting any changes to space occupancy and space use by updating internal Faculty of Engineering databases and notifying Facilities and Operations; update the Faculty of Engineering infrastructure database for space assignments, terms of space use, primary equipment, etc.

Use and manage data and metrics to support the resolution of space conflicts and competing space priorities.

Manage and contribute to the Infrastructure Management Framework processes and procedures including the Infrastructure Request Form, Infrastructure Planning Committee meetings, equipment and storage management, and space assignment records.

Generate space reports and floor plan drawings as required for review (e.g. building inventory, gross building area, reports by use, function, occupancy, condition)
Have 3 years of planning and project coordination experience
Demonstrated experience in planning, programming, conceptual layouts and design drawing details;
Ability to review and provide edits to technical reports, procedures and manuals;
Ability to read and understand architectural and engineering drawings to ensure user needs have been appropriately considered in the planning, design and construction stages;
Experience with Google (Sheets, Docs, Mail, Drive, etc) and the Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, PPT, etc)
Preference to candidates with knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals of research and equipment within a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics) post-secondary environment
Demonstrated competence with AutoCAD is preferred
