Manager, Operations:


The Manager, Operations is responsible for management of production trades, repair and refit projects, operations, facilities, and safety & environmental compliance at Vancouver Drydock Co.

Ltd.

Reporting to the Director of Projects, the position is accountable for shipyards overhead budget, schedule, quality, and safety performance of all production trades and all repair and refit projects.

Responsibilities include ensuring projects are properly staffed and supervised to meet established schedules and contractual requirements and ensure that all work is performed in accordance with current ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and OHSAS 18001 standards.

The Manager, Operations is responsible to work with the unions to provide trained trade workers requested by the Project Managers.

The role provides leadership and direction to the Drydock operations, setting expectations for direct reports, and fostering a culture of continuous process improvement

Note:

Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at Vancouver Drydock - 203 East Esplanade North Vancouver.



What you'll do

  • Manages cost, schedule, quality and safety for all trade and repair operations by monitoring budgets, providing skilled and efficient resources, ensuring workmanship meets quality standards, and ensuring compliance with VDC safety procedures.
  • Manages hiring, training and deployment of qualified production trade workers.
  • Allocates manpower to projects in accordance project schedules and priorities, and ensures workers have the requisite skill for assigned tasks.
  • Monitors work progress with subordinates to assess job status. Provides guidance, direction and corrective action where required to ensure Company and contractual project expectations are met.
  • Leads process improvement initiatives for the Production Department.
  • Champions VDC's safety and environmental programs by instilling safety and environmental compliance as core priorities in all operational activities, and developing an operational staff dedicated to providing a safe, accident free, environmentally compliant workplace.
  • Provides leadership, guidance, and support to direct reports by communicating daily, conducting regular meetings, arranging for required training, and ensuring sufficient intershift communication to maintain an effective and productive operation.
  • Develops effective operational communications where all subordinates are provided with the information, guidance, and performance expectations necessary to fulfill their role.
  • Manages and assists in providing input to new projects for repair/refit strategy development, project schedules and cost estimates.
  • Provides leadership to the shipyard staff and supervisors in ensuring that all shipyard work and work practices follow contractual requirements, ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and OSHAS 18001 standards.
  • Specifies and assists Purchasing Department in procuring consumable materials for new construction and repair projects.
  • Ensures subordinates maintain departmental records including certifications and training records.
  • Reviews and audits maintenance and safety inspections of equipment, facilities, and work sites, ensuring deficiencies are quickly rectified.
  • Oversees the maintenance and development of ISO procedures for production trades, repair, and facilities operations.
  • Ensures compliance with union agreement and WCB regulations.
  • Develops and monitors initiatives to improve departmental skill and productivity by liaising with superintendents and project managers in assessing skill and work habits of individual employees. Directs training as required.
  • Maintains positive relationships with customers by ensuring work is completed in accordance with contractual requirements and communicating scope of work, project progress, material, and workmanship.
  • Works with Human Resources/Labour Relations, the Training Coordinator and Union officials to ensure the availability of a trained, skilled workforce.
  • Participates in the planning, development, and financial control of shipyard capital projects.
  • Works with disability and rehabilitation consultants in assisting superintendents place injured employees by selecting appropriate tasks and condition.

What you'll bring

  • A Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Business or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A minimum of 10 years' experience in a managerial or supervisory position in a shipyard or heavy manufacturing environment with progressively increasing levels of responsibility.
  • Experience managing a large multidiscipline project driven unionized workforce is required.
  • Strong operations background with excellent project and trade management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate an organization in support of operational goals.
  • Excellent technical skills with ability to read and interpret complex technical specifications and drawings.
