Course Description:

Education in Second Languages : Social, linguistic, and epistemological issues in Indigenous language teaching and learning, drawing on academic and community knowledge bases.

Analyzes approaches to the development of Indigenous language proficiency through an examination of specific Indigenous language teaching methods for first language and additional language learners.

Emphasis on the relation between instruction and language policy and planning as well as instruction and students own language learning and maintenance.

Focuses on how to develop teaching practices and how to evaluate language learning.

Teaching Qualification Requirements (TQRs):

  • A Master's degree (in exceptional circumstances applicants without a Master's degree but with significant research or professional experience related to the course content may be considered)
Experience

  • Expert knowledge of course content as outlined in the course description
  • Knowledge of the Quebec Education program (QEP) and the curriculum of the partnering school board with whom this course is being giving in collaboration.
  • Familiarity with the 13 professional competencies specified in the Ministère de l'Éducation
  • Experience as a teacher, administrator, or consultant in the partnering school board for which this course is being delivered.
  • Experience teaching in the Quebec elementary school system
  • Previous successful experience teaching similar course(s) to preservice teachers
  • Previous successful experience teaching similar courses in Indigenous communities.

  • Must be available to attend course coordination and planning meeting minimum of 2 weeks in advance of the course start date

Additional Information:

  • The University may, at its discretion, assign a person of its choice to give this Course/Teaching._
- lease note that, government directives permitting, it is anticipated that most courses will be taught in person. Should government restrictions prohibit in-person teaching, courses will revert to remote teaching. In the event of such a change, Course Lecturers will be advised without delay. Course Lecturers may be required to prepare and deliver teaching material suited to a remote/online teaching environment using a virtual learning platform (e.g., Zoom, WebEx) and the McGill myCourses learning management system. Training and assistance on remote teaching is available through Teaching and Learning Services (TLS). Course Lecturers are encouraged to record their lectures._
