The Greater Victoria School District provides public educational services to approximately 20,000 students in the Greater Victoria Area, encompassing six municipalities.

To provide this service, the District has a current operating budget of nearly $300 million and employs up to 4,000 staff which includes teachers, principals and vice-principals, support staff, psychologists, speech and language pathologists and exempt managerial staff.


The Greater Victoria School District is seeking a dynamic, detail-oriented Server Administrator who is passionate about supporting educational excellence through technology.

Reporting to the Manager of IT, this role will manage and maintain the server environment for the school district to ensure seamless and secure access to digital resources for our educators, students, and staff.

This includes overseeing system performance, coordinating updates, and ensuring the highest level of service availability and security.

Key Responsibilities:

Oversee and manage all district server systems, including installation, administration, and maintenance tasks.

Develop and implement disaster recovery protocols for server systems, ensuring data integrity and system availability.

Proactively monitor system performance and troubleshoot issues as they arise to minimize downtime and loss of productivity.


Coordinate system upgrades and updates to ensure the latest security measures are in place and all systems are running at peak efficiency.

Regularly perform data backups and archive files as needed to ensure data safety.

Collaborate with the IT team to improve server infrastructure and develop strategic plans for future growth.

Maintain documentation for system configurations, procedures, and service records relating to server hardware and software.

Provide technical support to staff as needed and foster a supportive and inclusive digital learning environment.

Maintain knowledge of current industry trends and emerging technologies to recommend updates to infrastructure, software, and hardware.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent.

At least 3 years of experience in server administration, preferably within an educational setting.

Strong knowledge of Windows Server environments, Linux, and virtualization technologies such as VMware.

Experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) is a plus.

Understanding of networking protocols, firewall configurations, and security systems.

Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize tasks.

Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain technical information in a user-friendly manner.

Preferred Qualifications:

Certifications such as MCSA, MCSE, or VCP are preferred.

Prior experience in an educational or school district setting is a plus.

This position falls within the CUPE collective agreement and has a pay rate of $39.22 per hour, plus a comprehensive benefits package, 35 hours/week, Monday-Friday 8:00am-4:00pm.
