The Infrastructure Management group at the Department of Public Works supports Nova Scotia's 1,800 buildings and infrastructure assets across a wide range of clients.

We maintain and support various government buildings and other built assets, including museums, core buildings and office buildings supporting the work of government, correctional centres, and justice centres.

We are also responsible for the oversight of various Dams and Historical Vessels stationed throughout the province.


Infrastructure Management supports a wide range of Client requests ranging from Electrical, Mechanical and Architectural replacements as well as Maintenance related repairs and solutions.

Infrastructure Management supports a wide range of historical buildings and assets and helps to maintain the provincial diversity and culture these assets represent.

Without our Infrastructure Management's proactive measures, equipment issues or failures could lead to an interruption of services provided.

The Architectural Trades Lead is just one of our key team players who support the overall safety and efficiency of our provincial building infrastructure.


About Our Opportunity:


As the Architectural (Carpentry) Trades Lead, you will coordinate, supervise and inspect all carpentry work conducted by staff and contractors on provincially owned and leased buildings serviced by the Department.

You will be responsible for all management functions as they relate to supervision of architectural trades staff (internal and external), and project management functions such as reporting on safety, scheduling and budget forecasting.

You have the important task of ensuring that clients are satisfied with all project work.

In addition, you have the responsibility for ensuring all work is completed in compliance with design documents, National Building Code of Canada, National Fire Code of Canada, the Occupational Safety General Regulations, and departmental requirements.


Primary Accountabilities:

Accountabilities includes repairs, maintenance, and new installations relating to:

  • Rough carpentry, including demolition
  • Fine Carpentry, including millwork
  • Castin place concrete
  • Interior repairs and renovations, including painting
  • Structural repairs
  • Roofing and other architectural systems

Qualifications and Experience:


You have High School completion, a Red Seal Carpentry Journeyperson Certificate (interprovincial) plus seven (7) years of related experience in commercial/institutional building construction and maintenance.

You must have at least three (3) years of experience in a supervisory capacity.


Frequent travel across the province is a component of this position; as such, a valid driver's license with a clean driving record is required.

You demonstrate an excellent working knowledge of the following:

  • National Building Code of Canada, and National Fire Code of Canada;
  • Occupational Health and Safety Act and General Regulation; and
- current construction safety practices and procedures.


Your ability to work within financial constraints, along with reading and interpreting specifications and drawings are essential to your success in this role.

Also essential to this position are strong public relations skills, planning and organizational skills as well as good verbal and written communications skills.


You ensure the effective management of human and financial resources by setting and evaluating staff performance targets, ensuring safety policies and procedures are adhered to, promoting diversity and a healthy workplace, demonstrating leadership competencies, respecting corporate human resources practices, promoting teamwork and individual development, maintaining internal communications, monitoring expenditures while adhering to procurement guidelines.


Safety training in the following are considered assets: First Aid certification and CPR, WHMIS, Scaffolding Safety, Fall Protection, Transportation of Dangerous Goods, and Confined Space Awareness.

Formal training in Project Management, a good knowledge of government procurement policy and tendering procedures are also considered assets.


We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.
