ABOUT THE ACCESS TO JUSTICE IN ENGLISH PROJECT
The QCGN considers access to justice in English in Quebec as essential to strengthening community vitality and representation.

The Access to Justice in English in Quebec (AJEQ) project is a community-based initiative developed by the QCGN with support from Justice Canada.


The project seeks to:

  • Better understand access to justice in English issues affecting the Official Language Minority Community (OLMC) in Quebec.
  • Develop effective ways to address identified access to justice in English issues.
  • Engage the justice system in improving access to justice in English.
The AJEQ project operates in all areas where authorities can facilitate, hinder, influence or arbitrate OLMC rights.

The project gathers qualitative and quantitative data from many sources to develop evidence-based positions and actions to improve access to justice in English.

Following the collection and analysis of relevant information, a report is prepared to explain a particular AJEQ issue and recommend what to do to effect change in the justice system.

The project supports QCGN actions to follow through on AJEQ report recommendations.


Reporting to the Access to Justice Project Director, the Junior Legal and Social Policy Researcher is required to support the work of the Access to Justice in English Initiative by conducting research on language rights and policies across Quebec and developing strategies to better organize justice services for the Official Language Minority Community.


CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct research on language rights in Canada and Quebec, constitutional law, administrative law, language rights, linguistic policy in Quebec's justice system, comparative law, human rights law, intersectionality, and other related topics.
  • Draft research papers, policy briefs, reports on Access to Justice issues in Quebec.
  • Identify, contact, and maintain stakeholder relations with governmental institutions and community organizations.
  • Develop strategies around the allocation of justice services across Quebec.
  • Support and collaborate with external lawyers on research tasks on legal briefs.
  • Review and draft highlevel policy documents and reports.
  • Monitor legislative changes affecting Access to Justice in English.
  • Manage and update Access to Justice web platform.
  • Adhere to all standards of excellence in file management and record keeping.
  • Ensure compliance with all reporting standards and requirements.
  • Attend meetings with stakeholders, as well as presentations related to the project.
  • Organize meetings, draft minutes, and prepare supporting documents.
  • Complete relevant administrative tasks.

REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

  • Postsecondary education in law or a related field or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or related work experience;
  • Demonstrated research experience;
  • Web management skills a strong asset (WordPress, creating and managing web content);
  • Strong organizational skills that reflect ability to perform and prioritize multiple tasks seamlessly with excellent attention to detail;
  • Good understanding of the Englishspeaking community of Quebec, including challenges and opportunities, especially in justice;
  • Proven experience working with various seniority levels with decisionmaking and approval processes in government, NGO and legal sectors;
  • Demonstrated experience leading and implementing network building and developing influence strategies to achieve desired outcomes;
  • Ability to lead and foster a collaborative working environment with networks of stakeholders having potentially competing interests and priorities;
  • English and French language skills, to communicate effectively, clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, proven presentation skills.
