Duties as the Nursery Forester include:

  • Conducting regular surveillance of the Nurseries plant inventory for pests, diseases, and abiotic problems and prepare records of any discoveries and develop management/control strategies
  • Liaise with the Pest Management Lab or other specialists (both internally and externally) to confirm identities of surveillance findings in all plant material at the Nursery
  • Support other Forestry units in pest and disease identification and management strategies upon request
  • Maintain a database for any pest occurrence that is updated continually and/or as issues are found
  • Prepare appropriate reports for Supervisors on pests
  • Assess all field trees annually for health
  • Maintain and manage GIS inventory of field trees
  • Communicating plant material expectations with vendors and inspecting plant material received for pest and disease and compliance with the City of Edmonton Landscape Design and Construction Standards
  • Reviewing and Approving of invoices
  • Coordinating contract tree watering onsite
  • Facilitate any other contract work onsite (including assignment, inspection and closeout of the work)
  • Inspecting contract tree watering work (including work, safety and Enviso inspections)
  • Reviewing and approving contract tree watering invoices
  • Liaising with Forestry Water Truck Coordinator
  • Facilitating spring digging of trees, including coordinating with an external vendor, inspecting work, reviewing and approving invoices
  • Prepare bid forms for RFQs to be sent to external vendors
  • Support in evaluating RFQs
  • Prepare and maintain tree renewal schedule of trees needed and ensure trees are available at the Nursery
  • Support Planting Leader with year end closeout
  • Inspect trees post pruning and report any deficiencies to the Nursery Crew Leader and ensure deficiencies corrected
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Completion of a 2 year technology diploma in landscape or horticulture technology, forestry, pest maintenance, or a related field OR Journeyman Landscape Horticulturist
  • A minimum of 5 years experience in landscape construction. ISA certification is an asset
  • Knowledge of insect, disease, and plant identification Proficiency working with databases for pest logs, tree inventories, weather summaries
  • Ability to assess pest populations for management options Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions
  • Ability to interpret landscape plans and specifications related to the work assigned
  • Ability to interpret contract documents and oversee contractors Experience using GIS software (ie ArcGIS) is an asset
  • Ability and experience using Google sheets is an asset
  • Ability to work outofdoors for extended periods and in unfavourable weather conditions as required by the work assigned
  • Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is a requirement for this position
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement for this position
