The City of Edmonton is looking for an experienced person to oversee plant material propagation and growing greenhouse and field production as a Nursery Gardener.

The plant material grown and cared for by this gardener will be used by various City Operations teams to sustain green assets across the City of Edmonton, with a major focus on tree and naturalization plant material.

This skilled arboricultural work involves the production and maintenance of nursery plant crops, as well as, some field supervision of a labourer team.

With a focus on the City of Edmonton's Cultural Commitments to Safe, Helpful, Accountable, Integrated and Excellent, you will:

  • Implement programs for a variety of plant material, nursery crop pest control, storage, irrigation and maintenance
  • Oversee and participate in the propagation of a variety of plant material through budding, grafting, seed collecting, germination, cuttings and other methods; plant transplants and cultivate nursery stock. This will include pruning, digging, irrigation, staking, tying and fertilizing
  • Manage the annual plant production records
  • Coordinate and execute the plant production in alignment with meeting the Nursery's business plan objectives
  • Identify and resolve plant crop health problems (disease, insects, rodents) and assist in the general maintenance of the nursery crops and fields
  • Participate in the general maintenance of buildings including snow removal, and road and parking facility maintenance
  • Ability to work in a unionized environment and working knowledge of municipal parks operations
  • Proven knowledge of Horticultural equipment operations and forestry best Management Practices
  • Knowledge of arboricultural procedures, materials, tools, and equipment used in the production and maintenance of nursery plant crops
  • Able to adhere to strict schedules and to maintain accurate records
  • The ability to identify various plants, understand plant needs and familiarity with landscape design and maintenance
  • Able to work safely around equipment and chemicals with proper PPE such as footwear, glasses, hearing protection, dust mask, and gloves
  • Able to safely operate a skidsteer, rototiller, tractor and a 1 ton truck
  • Able to work in a predominantly outdoor environment under varying weather conditions across all seasons

Qualifications:

  • Red Seal Journeyman Landscape Gardener or a Diploma in Horticulture, Turf Science or Forestry
  • 5 years experience in Horticulture, Forestry, Plant Nursery Production and/or Landscape Maintenance
  • International Society of Arboriculture Certification and/or a Landscape Pesticide Licence would be an asset
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Drivers License (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Drivers Permit is a requirement of this position
  • Demonstrate supervisory responsibility
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Applicants will be required to arrange their own transportation and where appropriate will be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This may require the applicant to obtain business use auto insurance.
  • Competency in Google functions
  • Ability to obtain additional training, permits, certifications or licenses as required
  • Emergency First Aid Level C with AED training
