Urban Forester (Pruning) - Landscape Technician II

City of Edmonton Urban Foresters are tasked with the administration, and adherence of the City of Edmonton's Corporate Tree Management Policy C-456B and the Urban Forest Management Plan as they relate to all public trees.


This Urban Forester Position will play a key role in the preservation, maintenance and growth of Edmonton's Municipal Urban Forest.


Some key responsibilities will be to:

  • Administer and manage contracts related to pruning, removal, and arboriculture services
  • Perform quality control inspections on both in house and contract pruning
  • Ensure scheduled contractor work is done on budget and on time
  • Coordinate and perform tree risk assessments and manage tree hazards through best management practices in boulevards and parks spaces
  • Use best management practices to encourage and implement new methodologies of caring for municipal trees
  • Remain up to date on new innovations and research in Arboriculture
  • Educate and communicate the benefits of trees, the importance of tree preservation and tree maintenance to both private and public stakeholders
  • Respond to 311 inquiries relating to City trees
  • Assess and make recommendations for trees with conflicts near utilities and coordinate work with Utility company and contractors
  • Assess and make recommendations for pruning and removals including evaluation for CPTED (crime prevention through environmental design) and tree girdling
  • Ensure that comprehensive policies, procedures and practices are developed, adopted and implemented to create as safe a working environment as possible
  • Work closely with other Urban Foresters and Arborists to provide an integrated approach to Forestry
  • Perform other related duties as required

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 2 year post secondary diploma in Forestry or related field Or Journeyperson Landscape Horticulturist
  • Minimum 5 years experience in Arboriculture and or Landscape Construction
  • Strong technical, functional and professional knowledge and skills in Arboriculture; knowledge of current developments, innovation and trends in Arboriculture
  • Experience pruning trees in a municipal environment
  • Experience working on hazardous trees and or storm damage response
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license (or provincial equivalent). Must arrange own transportation to be reimbursed in accordance with the City of Edmonton policy. This will require business auto insurance
  • Obtain and maintain a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
  • ISA Certified Arborist an asset
  • Project Management Certification an asset
  • TRAQ (Tree Risk Assessment Qualification) an asset
  • Experience assessing insect and diseases on trees is an asset
  • Understand equipment required to complete arboriculture tasks
  • Contract or Staff supervision experience
  • Good understanding of computer programs and GIS
  • Knowledge of arboriculture techniques and practices
  • Ability to deal effectively with the public
  • Ability to express decisions both orally and in writing
  • Public communications and Public relations experience

The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time.

Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance.
