About Us:

The Ministry provides funding to over 300 provincial school authorities for ECS to Grade 12, within the Financial Services and Capital Planning Division.


Through safe and caring schools for all students, Alberta's government is making life better by investing in education - one of the most important investments we can make in our future.


The Ministry has the following responsibilities:

develop curriculum and set standards; evaluate curriculum and assess outcomes; teacher development and certification; support students with diverse learning needs; fund and support school boards; First Nations, Métis and Inuit and Francophone education; and oversees basic education policy and regulations.


Role:

Reporting to the Education Manager, this position functions within the parameters of applicable government and ministry legislation, regulations, policies, directives and procedures in order to administer programs and services that impact the education of children and students


This position is accountable for assisting with development, interpretation and implementation of legislation, policies, initiatives and projects related to building school and school authority capacity of universal and targeted approaches and supports in schools (e.g., mentoring, positive behaviour supports, comprehensive school health, trauma-informed practices, etc.) for creating welcoming, caring, respectful and safe learning environments.

The role of the Safe and Caring Schools Policy Analyst performs the following roles and responsibilities:

  • Provides policy advice, issue analysis, strategic research, and options development within the branch and sector of evidence-informed universal and targeted approaches and supports for creating welcoming, caring, respectful and safe learning environments.
  • Designs and implements initiatives that build capacity of school authority staff in utilizing evidenceinformed approaches and supports (e.g. mentoring, comprehensive school health, positive behaviour supports, etc.).
  • Maintains knowledge in educational research and evidenceinformed universal and targeted approaches and supports to meet the social, emotional and wellbeing needs of children and youth.
  • Develops and coordinates briefings, background papers, and strategies for senior officials on key findings of current policy directions.
  • Draws interpretations from specific content knowledge, expertise and school system experience, to provide strategic direction, input and guidance on crossministry and community initiatives (e.g. Alberta Mentoring Partnership)
  • Provide Alberta Education perspective into Alberta Mentoring Partnership Strategic and Operational planning activities.
  • Supports linkages and liaises between the Alberta Mentoring Partnership and School Authorities to promote mentoring in schools and gather information about mentoring needs.
  • Provides context, advice and support to senior leaders regarding Alberta Mentoring Partnership activities and future directions.

Qualifications:

A Bachelor's Degree in Public Administration or Education, plus a minimum of four years experience in two or more facets of public policy development and coordination (e.g. issue identification, research and analysis, options development, consultation, decision-making, implementation, evaluation/performance measurement).

Equivalency:

Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or 1 year of experience for 1 year of education

Assets:

  • Master's degree preferred in a related field such as Education, political science, public policy or public administration in order to provide the analytical and conceptual thinking abilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to implement evidenceinformed universal and targeted approaches and strategies that support student wellbeing and build their social emotional competencies, preferably in a school setting.
  • Experience working on crossministry projects.
  • Knowledge and an understanding of applicable acts and related legislation, ministerial orders and regulations, including: Education Act and Regulations; Child, Youth and Families Enhancement Act; Child First Act; Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act; Information Protection Act; Guide to Education: ECS to Grade 12; Professional Practice Standards
  • Teacher, Leadership, and Superintendent; Funding Manual for School Authorities; and, Ministerial Order
