Position Overview

The Health & Safety specialist's primary objective is to support execution of Hexion's strategic and tactical plan for all Health and Safety matters for three facilities in Canada, Edmonton Alberta, St Romuald Quebec, and Edmonton R&D located in Edmonton. The successful candidate understands the regulatory and tactical overlap of the Environmental, Health, Safety and Process Safety regulations. This position fosters a culture of engagement, empowerment, and compliance through direction and oversight of programs that support of Hexion's primary goal of a compliant and incident-free workplace. The Health & Safety Leader plans and directs activities for alignment with the corporation's EHS goals and initiatives with each assigned manufacturing site. The position provides leadership, coaching and technical expertise to sites and site leadership teams to meet these goals

Job Responsibilities
  • Assess facility operations for regulatory applicability, and local regulatory compliance with health & safety requirements
  • Actively drive and support for Health and Safety programs (e.g., workplace safety and contractor administration) with operations and plant leadership level associates at the three Canadian sites.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of employee safety programs.
  • Participate on EHS project teams
  • Provide and monitor safety training programs to instruct employees in site EHS policies and procedures.
  • Focus on promoting and supporting an EHS culture from within by driving the implementation of core EHS programs, policies, and initiatives.
  • Lead Incident Investigation and drive corrective action through cause mapping and 5-why analysis
  • Be an active, engaged part of the site safety team by interacting with associates remotely and in the field
  • Participate and assist in both minor and major shutdown and maintenance activities.
  • Manages, conducts and/or arranges Health and Safety Training as needed.
  • Manage, assess, and approve third party contractors using Avetta prequalification.
  • Identifies Health & Safety hazards in the plant and works with all departments to reduce and eliminate risks.
  • Proactively lead, coordinate, and participate in Health & Safety performance improvement initiatives.
  • Supports site emergency programs and conducts emergency drills.
  • Knowledgeable in 5S philosophy and actively implements 5S improvements.
  • Conducts or assists with EHS, PSM, and ISO audits and participates in PHA reviews.
  • Manages new product introductions to facilities and identifies any deficiencies prior to facility use.
  • Leads Health and Safety projects and provides input for Capital Projects.
  • Facilitate/co-chair the Sites EHS Committee.
  • Gensuite Administrator – Concern Reporting, Action Tracking System, MOC Manager, Compliance Calendar, Application Permissions, Injury Reporting, Industrial Hygiene, Incidents and Measurements.
  • Success Factors Administrator – Computer Based and Classroom Training. Sets up and administers Programs.
  • Compiles and analyzes Health & Safety data for monthly reporting.
  • Participates in Global Management Standards creation.
  • Strong working knowledge SAP
  • Perform related duties as assigned or required, within the scope of practice
Competencies

Leadership:

  • Communicate and execute tactical direction and provide health and safety leadership for three sites
  • Develop partnerships with site associates and site leaders
  • Actively engage and coach Site Leadership Teams within three sites
  • Participate on Corporate teams, as applicable
  • Establish communication channels with each site to ensure execution of EHS strategic initiatives and expectations and provide guidance & feedback regarding all
  • Capable of working and delivering in complex working environments and under pressure

Operational EHS Management:

  • Support Site execution of Health and Safety performance & cultural metrics to gauge current state and provide basis for continuous improvement
  • Function as the local Subject Matter Expert for key health and safety programs
  • Actively engage associates and site teams in the field
  • Provide opportunities for positive recognition
  • Provide leadership and facilitation of incident investigations. Ensure robust process is in place to determine corrective and preventive actions.
  • Participate in and ensure EHS matters are fully addressed in sites' PHA
  • Provide oversight and management of site health and safety related action items
  • Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the Safe Work Permitting process and lifesaving rules and safety enabling and environmental procedures
  • Participate in development and execution of site capital expense spending budget relating to health and safety
  • Working knowledge in effective injury management, return to work and WCB case management protocol.
  • Function as part of a safety sensitive site, report fit for duty and positively contribute to an environmentally sound manufacturing team.

Regulatory Compliance:

  • Support compliance assurance programs for all applicable local, provincial, and federal health and safety regulations
  • Have a working knowledge and function as the subject matter expert in all aspects for Alberta OHS and its applicability in chemical/industrial settings
  • Have a working knowledge and function as the subject matter expert in all aspects for CNESST and its applicability in chemical/industrial settings
  • Implement and follow Provincial Regulations and CDC guidance involving contagious or viral issues impacting the workplace.

Auditing and Management Systems:

  • Track and act on standardized EHS performance & cultural metrics on a routine basis consistent with company requirements.
  • Identify and implement initiatives to drive continuous improvement
  • Administer, plan, coordinate, and execute company adopted EHS management systems & ensure site complies and meets deadlines on all management systems
  • Conduct periodic assessments of sites' EHS programs including contractor activities
  • Support the corporate audit program as needed
Minimum Qualifications
  • Experience as a health and safety professional in a chemical manufacturing environment is preferred. Manufacturing/industrial environment experience at a minimum.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate in both English and French both written and spoken.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of health and safety regulations
  • Willingness to obtain a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation
  • Strong working knowledge of both Alberta OHS and Quebec CNESST legislations and requirements.
  • Ability to work in fast paced environment and self-directed at times
  • Ability to effectively communicate and interact with all levels of the organization
  • Ability to effectively engage and build trust within a manufacturing facility
  • Ability to lead and influence project teams and program execution
  • Passion for recognizing and leading positive change
  • Aptitude to lead and make challenging decisions in any situation

Education

  • College/University Graduate Bachelor of Science degree in Environment, Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health and Safety, Engineering or technically related field or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Professional certifications an asset

Travel

  • 25-30% domestic travel
