Flemo Farm Assistant Trainee

Main Tasks:


In 2024, Flemo Farm, a Community Engagement and Entrepreneurial Development (CEED) project, embarks on its fourth year of cultivating a thriving urban farm spanning half an acre within the Flemingdon Park hydro corridor.

The Assistant will play a central role in the entire farming process, from seeding, planting, harvesting and selling the produce at the weekly farmers' market.

Work closely with the farm's coordinators on the maintenance of the infrastructure and community engagement with the residents of Flemingdon Park.

Additionally, the assistant will actively engage in a series of technical workshops on farming, including food justice, farming techniques, community gardening, and anti-oppression strategies, sharing experience and knowledge.

This position is only open to those who are currently registered with Miziwe Biik Aboriginal Employment and Training.

Duties include (but are not limited to):

  • Farm Tasks: Collaborate with the Farm Coordinator to execute a range of farm activities, which include but are not limited to seeding, transplanting, mulching, weeding, watering, pruning, and harvesting, ensuring the farm thrives.
  • Community Engagement: Foster a welcoming atmosphere for volunteers and actively engage with community members. This involves mentoring gardening volunteers, conducting farm tours, collaboration with Community Farmers and potentially representing the project at events and media engagements, sharing insights about the farm's journey.
  • Peer Leadership: Demonstrate leadership by overseeing and guiding volunteers in various farmrelated tasks. Cofacilitate communitybased workshops and generously impart knowledge about the farm to volunteers whenever possible, promoting a culture of shared learning.
  • Educational Programming: Collaborate with Farm Coordinators and other Flemingdon Health Centre (FHC) staff to design and deliver educational programs for community members, thereby contributing to their growth and empowerment.
  • Weekly Farmer's Market: Provide valuable support for the farmer's market, including mentoring volunteers and assisting them with cash handling, merchandise presentation, and the delivery of friendly customer service, ensuring a successful market day.
  • Community Composting: Provide support on the following tasks, intaking compost from program members, tracking waste/weight and participants, moving compost from bin to bin to ensure the cycle is ongoing, cleanliness of bin system and some educational workshops.
  • Collaboration and Meetings: Actively participate in FoodShare staff and team meetings, engage in internal committees, complete necessary staff training, and meet reporting requirements such as timesheets, ensuring alignment with the organization's goals and standards.
  • Digital Tools: Work proficiently with G-Suite tools, including Google Drive, Sheets, Docs, Calendar, and Gmail, to streamline communication and collaboration.
  • Adaptability: Be ready to take on additional duties as assigned, demonstrating flexibility and a commitment to the project's success.
Required Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience

Miziwe Biik Registration:
Applicants must be registered with Miziwe Biik Aboriginal Employment and Training.

  • Passion for Community-

Led Projects:
An interest in community-led food initiatives and/or neighbourhood-based community organizing is a plus.

Food Justice:
A demonstrated dedication to the principles of food justice and equity is essential

  • At least one year of experience in vegetable gardening, growing food, or working with plants
  • At least one year of experience working with community groups and diverse communities.
  • Diversity Awareness: The ability to work effectively within a diverse community, respecting people of various ages, abilities, and cultural backgrounds.
  • Outdoors Enthusiast: A genuine enthusiasm for working outdoors.
  • Green Thumb: Experience in gardening, food cultivation, or plantrelated work is a valuable asset.
  • Youth Engagement: Prior experience working with children and youth is beneficial.
  • Food Systems Knowledge: Familiarity with food systems, including growing, cooking, and composting, is an advantage.
  • Effective Communication: Strong interpersonal and some conflict deescalation skills are required to engage effectively with community members and team members.
