The BC Hydrophone Network (BCHN) is a partnership between several NGOs and First Nation communities on the BC coast that seeks to improve marine mammal research and ocean management practices by strategically designing and installing hydrophone systems to monitor and record underwater acoustic soundscapes.

The BC Hydrophone Network enables organizations to build, maintain and contribute to a shared, coast-wide acoustic information system that is available for research, management, stewardship, and educational purposes.

We are a small, motivated team who are primarily focused on finding technical solutions to improve our understanding of whale habitat usage and impacts of vessel noise along the entire BC coast.

We are seeking a skilled and experienced Electrical Technician to join our team. As an Electrical Technician, you will be responsible for performing a variety of electrical maintenance and repair tasks.

Responsibilities:

  • Field trips within BC, generally to specific remote areas, to install and service hydrophone systems
  • Procurement of electrical and mechanical system components
  • Mechanical or electrical assembly of shore station or underwater hydrophone mooring components
  • Remote monitoring and technical support of existing lab and shore station infrastructure
  • Working directly with BCHN partners to assist with their unique needs and ensuring continuous flow of quality hydrophone data
  • Working variable hours, dependent on field work demands and travel schedule
  • Standard hours, 37.5 per week, with hours worked in the field beyond standard to be compensated for with equal time off

Skills:

  • Comfort navigating a Linux environment and maintaining systems, locally and remotely
  • Experience troubleshooting electrical or computer systems in the field
  • Familiarity with remote power systems, predominantly solar or wind
  • Ability to selfmonitor and work remotely on computer or electrical projects
  • Ability to work in small groups with strong teamwork and interpersonal skills
  • Experience with project planning and task management, formal or informal
  • Ability to work flexible hours and be available for field trips which can range from a single day to two weeks
  • Experience writing or maintaining system documentation.
  • Capability of handling sensitive and heavy equipment on and off small marine vessels, and along rocky, slippery, and steep shorelines.''
