Main Duties of the Job

The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to recruit an Engineering Technician to join the Estates Operational Team. The successful candidate will join a team of Technicians responsible for the maintenance, repair and validation of over 180+ Dental chairs as well as associated equipment such as: Lights, Spittoons, Amalgam Separators, bracket tables, etc. Applicants must demonstrate flexibility and initiative when dealing with a wide range of engineering services and will have experience maintaining equipment as part of a planned preventative maintenance program. Applicants must have served a recognised apprenticeship in either Electrical or Mechanical Engineering and have post-apprenticeship experience. Previous experience within an Acute Hospital is desirable. The successful candidate will have good communication skills and is expected to work with various levels of staff across the Trust.

Job Description
Job Responsibilities

To provide a comprehensive technical service in respect of the maintenance, repair, installation, validation and testing of sterilisers, dental, podiatry and decontamination equipment throughout the Trusts properties, PCT properties and approximately 40+ dental clinics. Candidates must have completed a recognised engineering apprenticeship, be self-motivated with a desire to develop new skills and flexible to meet the demands of a large acute hospital. Specialist training and support will be provided where necessary with the the chosen candidates required to develop into a skilled maintenance technician who may be required to:

  1. Carry out planned & reactive repairs to over 180+ Dental chairs as well as associated equipment such as: Lights, Spittoons, Amalgam Separators, bracket tables, etc. All equipment is of a varied range of manufacturers, age profile & clinical function.
  2. X-ray equipment
  3. Dental Carts
  4. Lab equipment such as: Extraction Units, Curators, Bunsen Burners, etc.
  5. External clinics
  6. Central & Local Compressed Air & VAC Plant
  7. Simulation Units
  8. Hand piece motors
  9. Mechanical & Electrical Reactive repairs
  10. Maintain CPD & Manufacturer Training
  11. Appointed as CP (Dental) in accordance with healthcare HTM guidance documentation.

Person Specification
Qualifications & Education

Essential: Recognised Engineering Apprenticeship, Relevant City and Guilds qualification & BTech

Desirable: Minimum ONC/BTech qualification (or equivalent experience), Current driving licence.

Knowledge & Experience

Essential: Significant post-apprenticeship experience, In-depth understanding of Dental Equipment, In-depth understanding of engineering installations and systems, Knowledge of Health and Safety Regulations and infection control policies and procedures.

Desirable: Experience of working in an Acute Hospital environment.

Skills & Abilities

Essential: Good verbal, IT and written communication skills
