1JustCity operates drop-in sites in three vulnerable Winnipeg neighborhoods: the West End, West Broadway, and Osborne Village. In the winter months, we also operate an Emergency Overnight Warming Shelter called Just a Warm Sleep.


We provide services to over 1200 unique individuals weekly and work with people living in poverty; experiencing homelessness or precarious housing, mental health issues and/or addiction, social isolation, oppression due to race or gender identity, and more.

Job Overview


The Food Manager supports all areas of food and food donation management by ensuring food is received, tracked, stored, and utilized to ensure maximum freshness and the best quality meals for guests.

The Food Manager supports the preparation of food, ensuring that nutritious and attractive meals are served each day. The Food Manager will also manage the Emergency Food provided to guests.

The Food Manager is expected to be creative with the donated food and find ways to use as much of the food as possible.


Responsibilities

  • Cook daily meals.
  • Develop menus based on available food ensuring nutritional standards are maintained; create and review daily food plans and delegate to volunteers.
  • Coordinate team of volunteers and update daily duties lists.
  • Train new staff and volunteers, support and oversee tasks.
  • Update and monitor statistical information including tracking donations and emergency food kits provided to guests.
  • Manage inventory levels, identify required items and prepare requests for kitchen and food related donations or purchases.
  • Identify items in surplus and develop a plan for utilization or distribution to other sites. Arrange for a donation table for guests or for delivery of food to partner agencies if necessary. Complete required tracking.
  • Participate in the allsite, Food Manager meeting.
  • Monitor fridges, freezers, and cupboards to minimize food waste.
  • Correct and model proper food handling practices, including preparing, serving, and proper temperatures and storage of food
  • Ensure compliance with foodhandling procedures among self and volunteers
  • Ensure fridges, freezers, dishwashers, cupboards, and ovens are cleaned on a (using the cleaning recommendations in the manual) regular basis to maintain the highest level of food safety and cleanliness
  • Ensure tables, chairs, aprons, cleaning cloths, and dishcloths are washed daily
  • Process, store, and plan for donations including Harvest Manitoba and pick ups.
  • Liaise with Harvest Manitoba prior to special events to see if they have inventory of any of our needed items (bbque, beach day and other special events).

Qualifications

  • Experience working in a commercial kitchen is an asset.
  • Ability to make creative meals for large groups of people, using items that are on hand such as soup, stew, chili, etc.
  • Uptodate Food Handlers Certificate.

Working Conditions

  • This position is fulltime days, typical hours are Monday to Friday. Flexibility may be required. Close contact environment setting with staff, volunteers and vulnerable community population.
  • Fast paced environment with occasional high pressure or emergency situations.
  • Possibility to encounter conflict, violence, illegal substances, sharps, human matter, and mental health crisis.
  • Work is performed primarily in a community dropin space.
  • Some physical work, including lifting, bending, climbing stairs, carrying up to 50 pounds is likely.
