The Manager:

Catholic Library Learning Commons will develop programs that reflect the relationship between the foundational principles of the library and information science field and foundational Catholic teachings and understandings.

This leadership role will be responsible for the strategic development, management, and knowledge mobilization of the Catholic School Library Learning Commons with the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board.

The Manager will provide advice, guidance, and support to teacher-librarians, and other staff regarding Catholic School Library Learning Commons policies, best practices, and procedures.


Description:

Strategically develop and recommend the goals, policies, resources, and services of Catholic school library learning commons that clearly align with the immediate and long
- term goals of the board, and meet the educational needs of students and staff;
Build and coordinate a proactive and strong library service with digital and print collections in schools and within the system that reflect Catholic perspectives;
Lead, model, and support a whole-school learning commons approach of participatory learning;
Work in collaboration with Human Resources to recommend, hire, and superviselibrary learning commons personnel;
Maintain awareness of changes in copyright legislation, including the Copyright Act and its impact on K to 12 educational settings;
Communicate and advise on the responsibilities of educators in relation to copyright compliance and licenses;
Work collaboratively with curriculum team members to ensure library collections support current curricula, as well as promote and support inquiry and deep learning;
Manage the Library Services budget

Coordinate all major Library Learning Commons services and systems: Learning Commons websites, acquisitions, cataloging, circulation, reserves, reference, interlibrary loan, and research instruction;
Organize, develop, plan, and deliver professional development to teacher-librarians, library support staff and teachers;
Organize and facilitate monthly leadership sessions;
Collaborate with I.C.T. on technology related initiatives and inventories;
Work collaboratively with vendors to identify suitable K-12 educational materials that align with the library learning commons.

Maintain awareness of new trends in library services and technology in order to improve service.

Qualifications:

Master's degree in Library and Information Science accredited by the American Library Association;
Analytical / administrative abilities to develop strategic planning and administer budgets;
Experience in directly supervising staff, preferably in a union environment;
Interpersonal skills for effective communication with staff, faculty, students, and administration; and

Preparing and presenting board reports.

Minimum of five (5) years' experience as the director of a library and / or library organization overseeing all administrative, management, budgetary, and personnel operations;

Understanding of Learning Commons Foundational Documents: Together for Learning, and Leading Learning;
Experience and familiarity with the Ontario Ministry K - 12 curriculum documents and professional learning networks;

Information technology skills:
electronic resource management, web site development, emerging web technologies in social media, online collaboration and communication tools, integrated library systems, and learning management systems;
Knowledge of library metadata standards and protocols; and

Knowledge of copyright laws as related to learning resources and services.
