Domestic Violence Counsellor

SUMMARY OF POSITION
To provide support, counselling, education, case management, and follow-up services to women, youth, and children who reside at Nova House.
DVCs will work closely with all agency staff to promote client safety, empowerment, facilitate change and healing in an environment that is physically and emotionally safe.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
COMPETENCIES:

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Undergraduate degree in Social Work or Human Service field or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Minimum of 2 years experience counselling adults and youth/children (specialized in domestic violence/crisis management is an asset)
- Demonstrated knowledge of issues pertaining to domestic violence and abuse, particularly to the cycle of abuse and the profile of an abuser.
- Awareness and understanding of PTSD, addictions, and mental health.
- Ability to incorporate best practices in the field including strength based, clientcentered approaches and working within a trauma informed philosophy.
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Good time management and organizational skills
- Ability to work under pressure alone, and in a team environment, and be reliable.
- Experience and ability to facilitate and teach adults and youth/children.
- Valid Manitoba driver's license with an acceptable driver abstract.
- Valid First Aid/CPR certification
- Up to date Criminal Record check including Vulnerable Sector
- Up to date Adult & Child Abuse registry check
RESPONSIBILITIES WILL INCLUDE:
In this position you will empower women to make informed choices by providing information, resources and opportunities to understand family and gender-based violence and by supporting them in developing and implementing a client-centered, strength-based plan.
This will include:
- Individual crisis and trauma counselling for women, youth, and children
- Planning, developing, and facilitating group sessions, and workshops.
- Providing advocacy for clients through collaboration with other staff and/or other community systems
- Case planning, risk assessments, and safety planning with all clients
- Multiple counselling sessions weekly with each client
- Competently, respectfully, and appropriately deal with aggressive or inappropriate behaviours without personalizing the behaviour.
- Proactively create a space of unconditional positive regard that allows clients a safe space to focus on their own mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual wellbeing.
- Maintain confidentiality and represent Nova House in a professional manner.
- Maintain appropriate professional boundaries, be respectful and have the ability to resolve internal agency problems.
- Provide accurate professional file documentation and statistical entries for all clients on the internal database system. Complete required documentation in a timely manner
