Main Purpose & Function
Urban Park Activation is seeking a Program Assistant Ill to join their team. The PAIII position is responsible for supporting the Recreation Programmer II and the Community Arts Programmer in the development, coordination and delivery of community-based recreation, social, arts, and culture programs in multiple parks in Vancouver's urban core. Using asset based and trauma informed approaches to community development and community-engaged arts, the incumbent will work closely with internal and external partners, artists and arts organizations, user groups, and the public in the development and delivery of community-engaged arts projects, programs and services in priority urban parks.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities
  • Coordinates the delivery of community-engaged recreation, arts, and special events or programs and participates in the planning of same in multiple parks in Vancouver's urban core.
  • Monitors programs and activity areas to ensure that the programs or activities are running smoothly.
  • Plans, assigns, reviews and supervises one or more Program Assistant I or II positions.
  • Prepares and maintains records related to assigned programs and activities.
  • Enforces rules and regulations and deals consistently and tactfully with groups or individuals who fail to observe these.
  • Provides information regarding programs, activities and facilities to interested groups and individuals
  • Assists in developing supply requests and submits maintenance and repair requests to the supervisor, and arrange for the disposal of unsafe, worn or obsolete equipment.
The successful candidate will work up to 25 hours per week on a variety of shifts, including evening and weekend shifts, as operationally required. The position will report to the Recreation Programmer II and the Community Arts Programmer.

Qualifications
Education and Experience:
  • Completion of an approved diploma course in recreation and some related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Standard or Emergency First Aid and CPR Level C is required.
  • A Class 5 Driver's License is required (Class 4 an asset).
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Demonstrate experience with recreational programs, community-engaged arts programming and special events programming.
  • Sound knowledge of the safety practices, policies, regulations and rules.
  • Some knowledge of the principles and objectives of harm reduction, trauma informed practice, and decolonization.
  • Working knowledge of the fundamentals of program leadership and development including non-violent crisis intervention and verbal de-escalation.
  • Some knowledge of modern office practices and procedures, including solid knowledge of Activenet.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts and to deal with them with tact and diplomacy.
  • Ability to coordinate, deliver and oversee activities and programs offered in an assigned area.
  • Ability to plan, assign, review and supervise the work of one or more Program Assistants.
  • Ability to maintain control and exercise discipline with tact and consistency.
  • Ability to maintain records and perform a variety of routine clerical tasks.
A current and valid Class 5 BC Driver's License is required. The license must not include any restrictions that would affect the ability to legally and safely carry out job responsibilities. Local area travel is a requirement of this position.

A Police Record Check is a requirement of this position. A clearance requires the absence of any criminal charges or convictions related to this position.
